Ruia-Mittal fight over Essar Steel jetties: Limelight on Essar Bulk Terminal Limited
Feb 17: As the battle between the Ruias and Mittals exacerbate over the control of jetties linked to the Essar steel mill in Hazira, now taken over by Nippon Steel and LN Mittal's AcelaorMittal, everyone's attention is focus on Ruia-controlled Essar Bulk Terminal Ltd, under whose aegis the jetties operate
8Essar Bulk Terminal Ltd operates a total of five berths with a total quay length of 1,650 mtrs with operational draft of 12 mtrs. This consists of two Mechanised bulk berths and three multipurpose berths for handling bulk and break bulk cargo. The terminal has a port back up area of 178 hectare for cargo storage
8It is an-all weather, deep-draft terminal which is located on the mouth of Tapi estuary along the western side of the Hazira peninsula in Gulf of Khambhat, under the Magdalla Port of Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB). Magdalla port is a "non majort" port, wherein the waterfront andonshore areas have been leased to different parties for captive use (Essar Steel, RIL, L&T, KRIBHCO, Gujarat Ambuja Cement, GMB), private shipyards (L&T, ABG) and a private LNG terminal (Hazira Port Pvt ltd-LNG terminal operated by Shell).
8The Mittals are claiming that the jetties were allocated as captive entities of Essar Steel by the GMB but the Ruias say that they are under a different company with take or pay arrangements with Essar Steel
