Chinese barriers on the Brahmaputra: Lessons from what it did on the Mekong
Jan 15: The Chinese have been accused of creating upstream barriers on the mighty Brahmaputra.
8China has done exactly the same with the Mekong river which originates in China and flows through major ASEAN countries. There is now a plan to build a 1200 km tunnel to divert the river.
8The issue had the potential to be the largest China-Asean conflict flashpoint after the South China Sea. Beijing regards controlling the river as a strategic objective.
8But after more than a decade of ham-fisted diplomacy, China has finally learned how to wield both the carrot and the stick in the region
