8One of the few bright spots for the tanker market last year was the notable increase in recycling sales. Of course, this could be viewed as a double-edged sword as many of these sales could have been a result of poor earnings across most of the tanker market sectors. However, tanker recycling activity could only improve after the low level of sales recorded for 2015 and 2016 and prices have continued to rise into the new year which will likely attract more sales. The recent spurt in LNG prices is making the use of gas almost unaffordable in India.
8The average LNG price in December spiraled to $9.7/mmbtu, up from $ 7.4/mmbtu for the same month last year
8While there was an expectation that prices will be lower on account of a number of new LNG terminals coming up globally, unusually cold conditions globally and a spurt in demand has kept gas prices high.
8The average price of LNG went up from $6.4/mmbtu in April-December, 2016-17 to $7.70/mmbtu for the same period this year.
8Clearly, these are prices which are going to eventually impact demand in the highly price sensitive Indian market where alternative fuel prices, such as naphtha or fuel or even petroleum coke prices are rising at a slower pace than imported gas.
8For now, despite higher prices,
LNG import for the month of December 2017 was 2031.0 MMSCM which was 6.8% higher than the corresponding month of the previous year. The cumulative import of 19389.0 MMSCM for the current year till December 2017 was higher by 3.4% compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.

The key to gas fulfilling its potential role as a ‘transition fuel’ up to and beyond 2030, is that it must be delivered to high-income markets below $8/MMbtu, and to low-income markets below $6/MMbtu (and ideally closer to $5/MMbtu).
8The major challenge to the future of gas will be to ensure that it does not become (and in many low-income countries remain) unaffordable or uncompetitive, long before its emissions make it unburnable.
8There are many countries including India where therI is an absolute price level, such as $5/MMbtu, above which customers can not afford to purchase the fuel either because of their income level, or because the end-user price level of the final product for which gas is being purchased would be too high.
8That fact that pipeline capacity utilization in India is low is a pointer to the inability of gas suppliers to find affording customers.
8KG Basin suppliers will have to keep these gas ceiling prices in mind while formulating their arithmetic.

The majority of the respondents in a recent global study believed that technological progress in renewables and battery storage would have a greater influence on gas demand than carbon reduction targets.
8Gas has already become an unviable fuel for the power sector, leaving demand to emanate from the highly fragmented industrial sector. Given the dynamics of this sector and its sensitivity to gas prices, it is has become extremely difficult for the gas sector, accustomed to operating with 15–30 year long-term contracts, to plan for 2025, let alone 2050.
8There seems to be little pressure on the Indian policy maker to seek a changeover to gas despite dangerous levels of pollution in the air. Does this mean that he is waiting for a switchover to electric vehicles rather than CNG fired vehicles to clear the air?

India's GAIL looks to sell 24 US LNG cargoes via tender for 2019-20 loading from its from the Cove Dominion Energy's Cove Point LNG facility
8Clearly, the gas major is shying away from attempting to look at the Indian market even though current prices are high and transporting hub-priced gas from the US to India makes sense
8The latest indications are that the spot market for March are expected to extend the robust winter demand in Northeast Asia ,as well as absorb the leftover demand from a pullback
 for February.
8GAIL has little faith that such high spot prices are going to stay this way as the year progresses with supply likely to come into the market

Demand for oil is not peaking anytime soon as was projected by many studies, according to fresh studies, that take into account the buoyant state of the world economy and rising oil prices.
8In the medium-term period 2016–2022, oil demand shows is anticipated to go up to 6.9 mb/d, rising from 95.4 mb/d to 102.3 mb/d. This corresponds to an average annual increase
of close to 1.2 mb/d.
8The outlook for long-term oil demand growth is around 111.1 mb/d by 2040, although average growth slows to around 300,000 b/d between 2035 and 2040 on the back of anticipated efficiency improvements, a further tightening of energy policies, as well as decelerating GDP and population growth.
8On the supply side, total non-OPEC liquids in the medium-term are estimated to grow by 5 mb/d, from 57 mb/d in 2016 to 62 mb/d in 2022. Of this growth, 3.8 mb/d is incremental supply from the US alone. After 2022, non-OPEC growth begins to slow, peaking in 2027 at 63.8 mb/d, before declining to 60.4 mb/d by 2040.
8Thus, the long-term focus for additional liquids demand remains on OPEC, from low cost producers.
8It is estimated that OPEC will need to supply an additional 7.7 mb/d in the period 2020-2040. This will mean that the share of OPEC crude in global oil supply is expected to increase from 34% in 2016 to 37% in 2040.

The anticipated expansion in both the upstream and downstream, as well as the mid-stream capacity needed to take care of extra demand, will require significant investments.
8The total investment has been pegged at a massive $10.5 trillion in the period to 2040.
8While investments are picking up slightly in 2017 and in 2018, it is clear that this is not anywhere close to past levels.
8The recent investments are also more evident in short-cycle rather than long-cycle projects, which are the industry’s baseload.
8"It is vital that this be rectified so that a lack of investments today does not lead to a supply shortage in the future," the research report says.

Is coal going through a revival, albeit a temporary one?
8Latest indications are that are expecting a flood of demand from buyers in Chinese companies wanting cargoes after restocking has emerged subsequent to freezing temperatures in China. Low temperatures pushed power plant thermal coal consumption to high levels, and prices to a 14-month high.
8On the longer term too, some are seeing a revival in demand for cleaner coal even though its share in the energy mix continues to fall
8Base load power stations will continue to run on coal for a long time to come despite a spurt in renewable capacity creation

Reliance Industries' Refinery Off Gas Cracker system was made operational in December, 2017.
8Out of the 10 petcoke gasifiers, four are expected to start by March 2018 and the rest in FY19.
8Even as the petrochemicals segment does well, the company's domestic E&P operations continue to shrink.
8KG Basin production declined to 5 mmscmd, down a third year on year and 9.6% quarter to quarter. More wells are shutting down and this will push down output even more.
8Shale gas output seems to have hit a ceiling of late.
8Incremental gas from the company's fresh R-series field in the KG Basin is now expected in 2020.
8And that is when the situation will look up.
Click on Reports for more  Details
India's current gas production system seems to be bad shape
8The KG- OSN-2001/3 block is not producing much and there is a gross underperformance of its wells.
8RIL's Sohagpur West isn't able to maintain output as well
8The Raniganj East field of Essar too is closing some wells as its sole offtakers has reduced consumption
8The bad news is that RIL has announced the closure of one more well last month due to high water production.
8In the Panna-Mukta, production is lower.
8India will have to wait a little longer before fresh production comes in later in 2018 from ONGC new fields
8A step up in production is expected from 2019 and going through 2020 and 2021

India is a long way off from reducing its import dependence for crude oil, going by current statistics.
8Crude oil production in  December, 2017 was 6.8% lower than target and 2.1% lower when compared with December 2016. There are no immediate signs of a significant upturn in crude production from domestic fields
8On the gas production front too, output is lower than targeted
8Both private and public sector gas output is lower that expected but private production was down by a steep 24% during the month.

High LNG prices driven by strong Asian demand has got lobbies in the US working hard to get permissions for new LNG terminals to come up.
8The pro LNG terminal lobby is arguing for quick approvals as new LNG projects are multiyear, multi-billion dollar efforts, claiming that they shouldn’t be held hostage by changing politics.
8There’s a tight window to capture market share and the time is now, the lobby is trying to project.
8While the pro LNG lobby claims that new terminals are going to create jobs, the anti LNG lobby seems to be saying exactly the opposite
8This group is of the view that LNG export terminals keep domestic gas prices high, create shortages and kill jobs
8Find out more on how gas lobbies pull in different directions and how US policy is shaped in the midst of such contradicting forces

Global LNG demand has been on the rise, increasing global gas prices and creating favorable netbacks for US LNG supplier Sabine Pass
8Systematic market changes in Asia are seeing higher LNG prices.
8So much so that Sabine Pass' netback was a high of $5.24/MMBtu in late December.
8Sabine Pass is currently working at full utilization, belying critics and cynics which saw an LNG market in over supply.
8The LNG market may still turn tepid in the face of new capacities springing up, but right now the going seems to be extremely good.
Click on Reports for more  Details
The rise in spot prices is coming at a time when GAIL should be readying itself to take on its US commitments now that gas has begun flowing in from additional trains in Sabine Pass.
8The problem however is that the Indian gas major pressed the panic button earlier when Asian and Indian LNG prices were low.
8It sold off some of its commitments to bigger LNG suppliers while at the same time entering into swap deals for oil-indexed deliveries which are now trading at lower prices than the spot market in Asia
Click on Reports for more Details
The cold wave in northern Asia - by far the world’s biggest LNG-consuming region - has also opened up arbitrage opportunities for traders, attracting LNG tankers from the United States
8Spot prices climbed to over $11.70.  Several February cargoes were sold this week at well over $11/mmbtu . Even spot LNG prices traded in the $10 per mmBtu range. Some March bids were reported at $10 per mmBtu.
8The point to note is that Asian spot markets are not only at their highest since November, 2014, but they have also been above oil-linked LNG prices since the beginning of last December - a sign the market is unusually tight.
8Spot LNG  is clearly more expensive than this oil-indexed gas - which currently costs around $8.50 per mmBtu

The spurt in domestic E&P business could not have come at a better time for E&P professionals.
8A long period of low prices has seen a lot of retrenchment in the industry. Professionals retrenched abroad had also come back to India.
8But the situation seems to be looking up now
8A set of new companies has come into the business after the completion of the discovered round.
8Even existing companies in the E&P business are on the lookout for E&P professionals
8Experience seems to be at a premium and retired professionals are back in demand

US shale oil output seems to be going up explosively, thereby putting a brake on further increases in oil prices.
8Latest data shows a big increase in rig deployment.
8The US data however comes in the midst of a reaffirmation by OPEC and Russia that they will persevere with oil-production cuts until the end of the year to clear a global glut. They also signaled their readiness to cooperate beyond the current year.

Bid Round I under Open Acreage Licensing (OAL) Programme for international competitive bidding was launched on January 18
8The e-bidding portal and the Notice Inviting Offer (NIO) are out.
8The EOI submission system already shows widespread interest across different geographies in India, even in areas which were earlier thought to be non-prospective.
8The website carries here a spatial description of National Data Repository information across India in terms of oil logs as well as 2D and 3D seismic data
8A 10 minutes by 10 minutes grid picture is also carried here of the Indian data
826 sedimentary basins with a total area of 3.36 sq km covering onland, shallow water and deepwater areas are covered in the database. The data is organized into the smallest possible units thereafter within these basins
8Fresh studies have shown an almost 50% increase in hydrocarbon resources
8A big feature of the new system is the opening up of the Kutch region where the undiscovered prognosticated resources are assumed to be 8271 mmtoe in relation to discovered resources of a mere 71 mmtoe.
8The Saurashtra Basin, offshore and onshore, has even higher unprognosticated resources
8There are lots of undiscovered plays in the well-explored Mumbai Basin as well
8The KG Basin has notched up the highest levels of available hydrocarbon reserves but given treacherous geology, exploration will not be a simple job.
8The Assam Self and the Assam Arakan fold have come up with large untapped resources as well
8Rajasthan has thrown up a lot of surprises too
8Play-wise resource estimation is given here. Several new basins have been opened up, with good prognosticated reserves.
