EIL is doing well even as the LTSK and consultancy business elsewhere faces severe pressure because of sharply lower investments in the face of low oil prices 8A lot of EIL's success however is based on monopoly oil sector orders from public sector Indian companies 8A perusal of the list of LSTK and consultancy orders bagged by EIL in the last nine months will show the preponderence of public sector orders, particularly in the refining sector. 8Many projects have been bagged on single tender nomination basis 8This is not to say that EIL does not have the expertise or the experience to do these projects but being a public sector company, it has a natural advantage as oil companies find it easier to place an order on the engineering major to avoid going through usually combative competitive process. 8The management's biggest challenge is to wean the company away from monopoly orders. For example, overseas business makes up only 16% of the total orders 8Then again, attempt to diversify are showing slower results. Hydrocarbons still make up 95% of the total orders, with infrastructure projects making up just 4% 8Fertilizers and metals make up just 1% and 0.5% of total business respectively Click on Reports for moreDetails

Even as the share of gas in India’s energy basket has fallen considerably in the past few years due to declining domestic production, all major players are betting on India’s gas share to increase sharply in the coming years, especially with the price outlook on LNG. 8Some indications are already visible. 8Concrete measures would be required for opening up the markets and take the policy intent to actual results. 8There is recognition that the lack of liquidity causes high prices, sub-optimal use and under-investment in the sector. 8There is also a realization that the upstream, midstream and downstream segments can no longer be progressed in isolation. 8For the country to truly benefit from the positive interest in the sector and reduce the costs for consumers, this integrated market development blueprint has now become a necessity. Despite gas growing in absolute terms, the contribution of natural gas has dipped from a high of 12 percent five years ago to only 6.5 percent at present, and in contrast to the global average of 23.8 percent. 8From a sectoral standpoint, gas is seen as an extension of oil and clubbed with it in fiscal policies. 8The unfortunate consequence of this has been exclusion from the GST regime in India since in India’s federal structure the states have been opposed to the inclusion of oil from which they derive very substantial tax revenues. 8This argument goes on to claim that a key to net reduction in India’s hydrocarbon import dependency is actually through much higher contributions of natural gas which would support growing a base of more diversified solutions. 8Apart from being substantially cleaner than coal and commercially available liquid fuels, natural gas is also more versatile as a resource. 8However, the merits of natural gas have not been adequately recognized to date, the argument goes on to elaborate Click on Reports for moreDetails

What is the big advantage that RIL plans to have by moving from naphtha to ethane to fire its petrochemical plants 8The RIL model is based on the advantages that the US petrochemical industry is reaping from low cost of cost 8The driver of U.S. competitiveness is the cost to convert ethane to ethylene versus naptha to ethylene. 8The cost details of producing ethylene in the US using ethane against naphtha is given here 8But the cost economics for RIL will work out differently because of the higher landed price of ethane brought in by the company's captive carriers in India. (BPCL) was said to have secured three medium-sized gas carriers (MGCs) of LPG for February loading at premiums of around $60/mt to February CP, said trade sources. 8In the LPG market, bullish sentiments continued for Feb-lifting barrels on the back of the tight supply in the Middle East and spot demand emerged in South Asia. 8In addition, fellow importer, Hindustan Petroleum Corp. (HPCL) also emerged in the market seeking up to 39,000 mt of LPG on FOB basis for Feb 23-24 loading from the Middle East. 8The Indian company was seeking 16,000 mt of propane along with 23,000 mt of butane in a tender, which closed earlier this week of which the results were still not available. 8Overall, prompt demand from India had strengthened by between 160,000-200,000 mt, strengthening demand for Middle Eastern cargoes due to proximity. 8India’s monthly average of LPG consumption last year stood at 1.766 million mt, but that for the fourth quarter had been averaged at 1.89 million mt, according to official figures. 8The rise in consumption of the gas resulted in a hike in LPG imports in the fourth quarter with the monthly average of 1.04 million mt, sharply higher compared to the year’s monthly average of about 845,000 mt. 8The trend of higher-than-usual demand in the country typically continues in the first quarter of the year, with the peak demand usually easing in April. Rooftop solar units installed on industrial and corporate establishments by third parties are offering power 30-40% cheaper than the rates offered by the state’s power distribution companies. 8This gap is expected to widen further as thermal power companies would need to increase tariffs to accommodate inflationary measures and solar modules prices fall further. 8The model - popularly called Opex model, includes a rooftop solar company setting up solar units on rooftops of industrial and commercial complex. They would run the plant and sell the power to the company at a rate which is cheaper than tariffs at which the discoms sell power. 8Upfront investment for setting up solar units on rooftop are being undertaken by solar companies who are selling the power generated at a price which used to be 20% cheaper last year.
