A new 50-year modeling exercise shows the relative capacity creation by different wind and solar energy sources in different regions of the world
8Onshore wind continues to dominate the space, but offshore wind picks up speed
8Projections show India's offshore wind energy contribution growing over the years, beginning from around 2025 onwards.
8Interestingly however, projections show offshore wind energy growth to be faster than onshore wind for India
8China clearly dominates the world

Is it possible that US shale oil producers and OPEC players can join hands to keep prices high?
8The OPEC seems to increasingly worried about rising shale output and loss of market share as they cut output to keep prices high.
8The prospect of an alliance has risen as some of the same companies that are working in shale are the same companies working in OPEC.
8But the problem is US laws strictly disallows orchestrating supply restrictions in order to affect prices.
8Meanwhile latest estimates carried here on this website seem to point to a supply overhand emerging in the later part of 2018 and 2019 continuing up to 2025 despite an upswing in demand.
8This is because US shale output is likely to rise to eat up excess demand. US output is turning out to be far more elastic than OPEC had imagined.
8This will keep prices under the lid.
8Saudi Arabia meanwhile seems to be in a tight spot. The fiscal breakeven is at $74/bbl, higher than current prices. The country has already sharply cut down public expenditure and it is now a question of garnering more market share or settling for a higher price for crude.

ONGC stands to lose a massive Rs 1000 crore if L&T is not able to complete the job within the April 30 window
8Well placed sources said that if the project is delayed, it will mean that gas production to the tune of 900 mmscmd will be lost. This will be a loss of around Rs 320 crore. The condensate loss, according to sources, will be to the tune of another Rs 150 crore.
8The entire offshore rig deployment schedule will be disrupted too, and that is going to cost whopping Rs 300 crore.
8To this figure must be added the loss of Rs 150 crore on account of additional cost of insurance, demurrage, preservation cost, mobilization and demobilization cost, among others.
8Roughly, when all other losses are taken into account, the loss will be a massive Rs 1000 crore, according to sources.

What is the internal carbon price that an oil & gas company should take into account while contemplating a future E&P project.
8It is noticed that most companies are factoring in a price of $10 to $20 in terms of carbon price (Click on Reports here)
8But the global "fail-safe" that are now being taken into account is much higher, at $50/bbl
8To be able to remain viable in the medium to long run, oil companies have the twin challenge of hammering down breakeven price levels to as low as possible, preferably below the $30 mark while taking into account a much higher carbon price than they had bargained for the future.
8There is no other way but to take these hard parameters into account while trying to push a project through the capital approval process
8Eventually there is no alternative but to model project economics and NPVs around IEA’s New Policies Scenario, Current Policies Scenario, and the Sustainable Development
8Scenario (SDS). If the NPV does not pass IEA's first two scenarios if not the SDS, the project may have to be dropped

Setting up a gas trading hub is not easy as countries such as China, Japan and Singapore have not been able to successfully put up their own hubs despite a lot of background work and enabling factors in place.
8Indian teams in charge of building a gas trading hub will have to begin with visits to the US or UK or Australia to figure out how it works in these countries and whether what works there will work in India.
8Studies and recommendations will be needed in putting together the regulatory framework in terms of pipeline infrastructure, ensuring interconnectivity of pipelines, tariff models and separation of transportation and sales paradigm in existing monopolies
8Standardized unbundled contracts must be the order of the day and working them out will not be easy.
8A lot of learning will be needed among Indian players before a hub can actually be designed.
8Capacity data disclosure and transparency will have to be the order of the day.
8Role of different players will have to be clearly defined and regulations laid down accordingly.
8What kind of market clearing mechanisms will be in place?
8How will price discovery be done?
8Many questions will have to be answered.
8One thing is for sure: A gas trading hub of the kind prevalent in the West will take many years before it can become a reality in India

8The latest tariffs from the auctions indicate a recovery after hitting historic lows in the previous auctions during 2017-18, rates have gone up by 16% recently
8Similarly, solar energy capacity was bid at Rs. 2.96 per unit for 500MW capacity in Gujarat, up from a low of Rs 2.44 hit in 2017-18.
8The reason for lack of participation for solar power auctions can be attributed to
-- Ambiguity on the imposition of anti-dumping and safeguard duties on solar power components
-- Auctioning agencies not providing enough safeguards for revision of tariffs in case of cost escalation.
-- Fixing upper ceiling of tariffs too has led to developers not bidding for the projects.
8In wind energy too, cost factors are at play

Even as the offshore drilling market continues to remain depressed, new offshore drilling rig construction levels remained healthy as orders were placed when the market was better, with 137 new rigs under construction (96 jack-ups, 14 semi-submersibles and 27 drillships)
8The depressing point to note is that 122 of these new rigs do not yet have a contract yet.
8While awaiting better market conditions, the negative market phase has also led, in several cases, to the postponement of the time frames for the delivery of plants under construction (ostensibly to 2018 and beyond).
8Even so, a significant number of units that will be delivered in the medium term
8Old rigs are now being retired as new rigs hit the market and this represents structural changes in the offshore drilling segment
8Old rigs under deployment with ONGC will eventually have to be scrapped as new rigs replace them

A new set of baseline data has emerged on how Indian energy consumption is going to behave for the periods 2020-25, 2025-30, 2030-40 and 2040-60.
8Very interestingly, despite the fact that India wants to move deliberately into a gas economy, the CAGR of demand for gas starts to be in negative territory from 2025-30 onwards, and this accelerates in the 2030-35 period
8However demand for oil and gas will continue to be positive even though it will decelerate
8What has caused one of the largest such research group in the world to come up with such projections?
8Indian companies must keep such projections in mind while conducting their scenario planning.

Despite the enthusiastic growth in demand for crude oil, sober projections made by international majors -- around which they base their medium and long term planning -- continue to be based on the assumption that demand growth will settle down 1% per year from 2020-25.
8Demand will peak around the middle of the decade and then falls by about 1% per year until about 2040.
8In 2050, demand for oil is 78 million barrels a day (mb/d) – about 85% of today’s oil production.
8The point to note is that even in 2070, oil use remains around 50-60 mb/d, because of the continued need for oil in heavy transport, as well as chemical manufacturing.
8In these circumstances, gas demand in rises 2% per year between 2020-2025 and by 1.5% between 2025-2030. It peaks around the middle of the 2030s and falls by 0.5% per year
for the rest of the decade.
8However, even in this scenario, E&P investments will be essential  as without it, the natural production decline rate would be about 7% per year. Over a period of five years, that would translate into about 30 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (mmboe/d) of lost production from the current level of around 95 mmboe/day.

Why is it always risky for private companies to invest in building downstream retail infrastructure in India?
8The reason is you never know when the government decides to step in, as it has now done by ordering oil companies to stop pushing price increases down to the pump.
8Soon enough, when oil prices begin to rise further, oil companies will have to take the hike in their balance sheets.
8This impacts the private sector, which is not extended the benefits of government subsidization. Soon enough, if oil prices continue to surge, private retail outlets will have to end up shutting shop like it did the last time around.
8Eventually, the variable is the price of oil. If it goes up, the private sector will be out, if it goes down, it will be in. To peg the fortunes of its retail plan only to the price of crude oil, over which it does not have any control, is an extremely risky proposition for private sector retail. And this is not something that they did not know. And this is one reason why private retail will never be able to set up a large enough base in India, for investments in this area far too risky here.
8On a larger perspective, the Modi government remained steadfast in raising prices but clearly, political expediency has come in the way. The logic now, as it should have always been, is that money in people's hands, when the hike is not passed on, is better than in the hands of oil companies, as that will go to shore up the larger economy through higher consumption, than money left with oil companies which will only go into oil & gas capex which has narrow spinoff impact on the economy.
8Manmohan Singh understood this basic economic principle better than Narendra Modi.
