8Business opportunity for equipment suppliers in a refinery.
Details
For the global refining sector to stay profitable, the industry will need a twenty-first-century technology makeover.
8Making the shift against a dynamic backdrop of market, geopolitical, and social pressures on refiners will be even more difficult.
8Refiners will have to be conscious of fickle consumer preferences and changing product demands as they respond to disruptive innovations in all economic sectors.
8The changes on the ground are extremely dramatic.
8The wisdom of constructing new ethane plants in the United States, for example, is being questioned by some within the chemical industry itself, who are warning that a supply glut could depress ethylene prices.
8Moreover, swings in oil and gas prices, key determinants of the relative competitiveness of individual crackers, can wreck havoc on baseline economics
8Innovative ways of producing alternative products are already forcing refiners to go back to the drawing boards.
8A $ one trillion dollar makeover the refining sector will be needed for the current breed of refiners to stay on top

Was Mukesh Ambani's ambitious foray into the telecommunication sector a far sighted attempt to cut potential risks in the refinery and petrochemical sector?
8The answer may well be "yes".
8A supply glut in the petrochemical sector is looming ahead even as large American, Chinese and Middle Eastern players with new technologies and cheaper feedstock get into the fray.
8The preeminence of the refining and petrochemical sector could be under serious threat in the coming years due to a variety of reasons.
8Ambani perhaps thought breaking through the Indian telecom market -- in which existing players looked over leveraged and vulnerable -- will be easier than challenging deep pocketed global peers in the refining and chemical business.
8Even as he consolidates his telecom investments, from which profits will take years to build up, Ambani may have to look to pour more investments into similar vulnerabilities in other segments of the economy to make up for the potential risk in his main business.
8Ambani has a unique advantage that his Chinese, Amercian and Saudi Arabian peers do not have. He has India as his captive market.

The Iranians have signed up E&P projects with a growing number of international companies last year while leaving out ONGC Videsh Ltd.
8But as far as India is concerned, both the economics and the politics surrounding Iranian energy continue to present multiple and complex risks.
8Is India's lack of success really a question of price setting for the Farzad B block or is it an inability to understand the intricacies of the Iranian mind?
8Why are the Chinese, European and Russian companies succeeding while we aren't? Surely Iran doesn't have a exclusion strategy for India in relation to the rest of the world? Or does it?
8Is it India's failure then?

The climate change lobby seems to be on the back foot these days
8Bank funding of the fossil fuel industry went down in 2016 but has seen a spike in 2017.
8The single biggest driver of the overall increase came from the tar sands sector, where financing grew by 111 percent from 2016 to 2017. Tar sands financing totaled $98 billion
8Financing for ultra-deepwater oil totaled $52 billion
8Banks financed $45 billion for LNG activities of companies involved with enormous LNG export terminals
8After dropping post-Paris Agreement, coal mining financing has leveled off globally.
8But outside of China, coal mining financing more than doubled over the past year.
8The policy assessment shows that no bank has yet truly aligned its business plan with the Paris Climate Agreement

Crude Oil to Chemicals (COC) is the new route to manufacture petrochemicals which skips the refinery segment entirely
8It elevates petrochemical production to the refinery scale
8COC is defined as a refinery configured to produce >40% per barrel of oil to chemicals.
8Due to its large scale, COC has the potential to be an imminent threat the conventional petrochemical and refinery industries.
8The website carries here some big ticket COC announcements
8As a global average, a refinery produces about 8% naphtha per barrel of oil available for chemical production but for COC, the average is more than 40%
8The potential impact of COC lies in its huge scale. The planned PX complex of a Chinese company is a massive 4.3 MMTPA, about four times that of an average world scale PX plant. It will take only a few similar refinery PX complexes -- which are already in the pipeline -- to significantly alter the local and global supply and demand balance.
Click on Reports for more. Details
New COCs coming in could provide an incredible chemical yield of up to 70-80%.
8The line between a refinery and a COC will get blurred with the latter competing for both fuel and markets
8COC takes scale and integration of petrochemicals production to a whole different level
8This will give COC players a huge competitive advantage.
8In addition to feedstock advantage and accessible markets, process configuration and technology choice become important competitive factors at such a large scale.
8Capital efficiency also becomes a critical competitive factor.
8Indian petrochemical plants attached to small to medium-sized refineries can well be priced out of the market.

The petroleum minister's assertion that the early commencement of supply of BS-VI fuel will mean that vehicular emissions will be as clean or cleaner than CNG can eventually become  a big threat for the CNG industry.
8Once new vehicles with BS-VI compatible fuel use hit the market, the economic case for continued supply of discounted gas to the CNG industry will be considerably diluted. CNG can well become non-competitive if crude oil prices stay low.
8There will then be a demand to divert subsidized gas to power or fertilizers.
8This is a development that policy planners in the rapidly growing CGD industry must take into account.
8The website also carries here a full template of the government's attempt to push the CGD industry countrywide. But eventually, market prices along with superior and cheaper renewable technology can upset the applecart for the industry.
8A long term financing profile for the industry must take into account these imponderables.

Multiple coal-fired power projects, with a total capacity of 440 gigawatts, have been canceled, deferred, or delayed around the world over the past three years, including at least 250 gigawatts in China.
8Even taking cancellations into account, some 220 gigawatts of new coal-fired power generation is under construction.
8There are a number of wild cards when it comes to the outlook for coal demand.
8Expanded access to electricity, a rapid shift to electricity for heating and cooling, or a breakthrough in electric vehicle technology, particularly in developing markets, could stoke stronger than expected power demand and, therefore, coal consumption.
8Advances in cutting-edge clean coal technology that enables the capture and storage of CO2 from coal power plants—an approach that is currently cost prohibitive—could also boost coal consumption.
8Even as coal demand goes up in developing countries, in advanced countries such as the US, demand is expected to stay flat instead of declining rapidly.
8Also know more about why gas is going to remain a more expensive fuel than coal for a long time to come.

Indian small sized refineries are being forced to expand.
8These refineries are being threatened by
-- spiraling prices of Crude oil (leading to vulnerable refinery margins)
-- inefficient infrastructure & poor product quality
-- lack of enough volumes of feedstock for petrochemical plants
-- increased cost related to regulatory & environmental compliance cost.
8Thus it is inevitable for small refineries to expand. The petroleum ministry too is supportive of these plans.
