Funds are now allocated for the Anandarko's 12 MMTPA LNG facility -- in which the Indian trio of OIL, ONGC and BPCL are heavily invested -- in Mozambique.
8Around $150 million has been earmarked in 2018 by Anandarko for site preparation.
8Around 2.6 mmtpa of LNG offtake has also been secured
8When is a final investment decision likely?

Even though ID commitments to any greenfield megaprojects, such as those in Mozambique or the US, are unlikely in 2018, construction works could still start on around 15 mtpa or new liquefaction capacity: Fortuna FLNG, Corpus Christi and the first wave of Qatari expansion.
8And given that 15 mtpa is roughly the amount of new capacity that is needed annually to sustain the expected long-term industry average growth rate over the next decade, this level of new FIDs would show the ability of the industry to maintain the required investment run rate despite very tough market conditions.
8That, in itself, will be a very encouraging sign of the health of the LNG industry.

There was a time not long ago, when Indian IT companies, after basking and profiting from the low cost business model, are moving up the value chain towards automation, cloud computing and digital technologies.
8They are digitizing and extracting metadata, performing quality reviews, de-duplicating data and filing digitized content directly into oil companies target data stores within an agreed time frame.
8They are providing end-to-end services that involves artificial intelligence, hyper-automation, heuristics and analytics to unlock valuable information from company data assets.
These companies are specializing in digitizing data in the following segments:

China and India today account for over half of the world's incremental demand for oil (find out demand projections for India till 2023 here)
8And today there is a surge of demand, thereby pushing oil prices higher
8In China however, the use of alternative fuels is displacing the use of oil
8India however is still to craft a viable alternative fuel paradigm.

As demand for crude oil picks up, the natural corollary that should follow is that oil & gas investments should pick up.
8Is that happening?
8Overall investment data for 2018 and 2019 does not show an uptick
8This could well mean that the oil & gas equipment and service industry, suffering from low utilization rates, may not see a recovery coming even in 2019

The Middle East's furious hunger to refine the crude that it produces means that India has fallen way behind in the refinery-cum-petrochemical capacity building race
8China still has pole position but the Middle East is forging ahead and will take over from China soon
8The future demand for oil is going to come from producers of naphtha, LPG and ethane (see projections carried by us).
8Private Indian oil refiners may find themselves squeezed between Chinese, Middle Eastern and US refiners and petrochemical producers in what is going to be an increasingly competitive environment.
8One way out for Indian companies is to tap the big and rapidly growing Indian market. While the petrochemical market is wide open, the crucial diesel and petrol markets are not.
8As crude prices rise, the government is trying to be brave by allowing retail prices to rise but it is only a matter of time before price caps are imposed.

Will large Indian players, such as RIL, lose their comparative advantage in the manufacture of petrochemicals?
8The answer could well be a "yes".
8Cost and availability of feedstock plays a big role in provide the much needed comparative advantage
8Low prices ensure that US ethane crackers enjoying a clear cost advantage over naphtha crackers elsewhere.
8The rapid increase in shale gas production has given the US some of the lowest gas prices in the world and this resulted in a glut of natural gas liquids, especially ethane, providing a huge boost to the petrochemical industry.
8On the other end of the spectrum, low cost of crude will provide Saudi Arabia a huge advantage in naphtha based cracking
8All of these developments leave India at a comparative disadvantage, it seems

Is India's decision to set up Rs 6000 ammonia-urea capacities to make it eventually free from importing urea a wise decision?
8Since ammonia can be produced far cheaply in the US at lower gas prices, would India have been better of importing the ammonia instead?
8The US has a huge advantage over India in producing chemicals such as ammonia and methanol
8And they are far cheaper and easier to transport than LNG
8Will India's big new ammonia-urea complexes become subsidy gulping white elephants?

The golden age for gas production in India does not start from 2020 when large volumes of KG Basin gas finds its way into the country
8The golden age begins from 2025 onwards, according to fresh analysis
8In fact, India's gas production is likely to see faster growth rates than all other regions of the world
Find out more in Reports  Details
Fresh research has claimed that India will not have any pipeline imports of gas until 2040.
8This scenario assumes that the TAPI pipeline or the Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline never gets built.
8Nor are deepwater pipelines built
8In other words, the country meets its additional import needs of 75 bcm of gas in the period to 2040 entirely with LNG
8There are deeper economic reasons. rather than just political and security underpinnings, why India will not build cross-country pipelines.

Where should India look for its LNG supplies in the future?
8Should it be the US or should it be Australia or should it be Qatar or Africa?
8The delivered cost of LNG from Qatar going up to 2040 will be very significantly cheaper than from the US and other places
8But it is not the delivered cost but the equilibrium price that matters
8A trade flow map right up to 2040 shows India's LNG flows concentrated from only a few sources
8And if Qatar wants to monopolize the Indian market, it can do so quite easily.

India gas demand will have a very complex structure going ahead
8Surprisingly enough, unlike what is thought of now, the power sector is expected to provide the maximum impetus for gas demand in India.
8It is estimated that up to 40% of the incremental gas demand in India up to 2040 will come from the power sector
8The reasons for this is apparently simple: gas provides a valuable source of flexibility to a power market in which solar plays a big role but which has an evening peak in electricity demand.
8What about other segments of the gas consuming business in India? How will demand from them pan out?
Click on Reports  for more Details
Even though gas is being trumpeted as the fuel for the future, the jury is still out on this subject.
8Methane emission is a big problem and unless check, the CO2 footprint of using coal, in some scenarios, can be lower than gas.
8Then again, when it comes to use of gas in power generation, if the carbon price goes up if the world wants to decarbonize more rapidly than how it is envisaged now, gas again become an unviable commodity
8If the CO2 price were to reach $30-40/tCO2 the economics would start to favour onshore wind instead of gas and at $60-120/tCO2 would favour solar PV instead of gas.
8This upper bound falls over time as the costs of wind and solar PV continue to decline while natural gas prices increase: shortly after 2030 there would be no CO2 price range at all that would favour gas (based on generation costs alone).
8Gas will have to fall back rapidly on alternative uses to stay ahead

US sanctions are forcing oil multinationals to move out of E&P projects in Iran
8No one wants to fall foul of the US banking system when sanctions start to bite
8Where will India stand if it were to be awarded the Farzad B block today?
8When sanctions begin to hit again, if India continues to import Iranian crude, it will have to fall back to a barter system, perhaps
8And while the barter system of trade has its disadvantages, it can boost Indian exports of medicine, steel and other essential items

The war on climate change is littered with claims and counter claims of all sorts, each backed with its own set of data. All kinds of lobbies are at work to create an environment of uncertainty around climate change and new technology needed to tackle it.
Here is one counter claim for your consumption:
8Despite claims that Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) will reduce air pollution, broadbased adoption of ZEVs will increase air pollution and associated environmental costs relative to new internal combustion vehicles. Increased reliance on ZEVs will increase overall emissions of sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, and particulates, compared with the same number of new internal combustion vehicles, even after accounting for emissions from petroleum refineries.
8The economic value of CO2 emissions reductions associated with ZEVs is effectively zero, the analysis claims. Although new ZEVs will reduce CO2 emissions compared with new internal combustion vehicles, the overall reduction will be less than 1% of total forecast energy-related CO2 emissions through 2050. That reduction will have no measurable impact on world climate and thus no economic value. Even if, by 2050, all internal combustion vehicles were replaced by ZEVs, the resulting reduction in CO2 emissions would be less than 500 million tons per year.
8Subsidies for ZEVs and the required infrastructure to support them benefit the affluent at the expense of the poor. A disproportionate share of the costs of ZEV subsidy programs will continue to be borne by lower-income consumers, who cannot afford to purchase ZEVs but who bear much of the cost for the supporting infrastructure. Moreover, most lower-income consumers cannot afford to install solar photovoltaics, which proponents claim will allow ZEVs to be charged with emissions-free electricity.

The domestic pipeline lobby yields great power in India. There are signals from the very top to help them out, and the "Make in India" programme is held up as a ruse to pressurise the oil & gas industry to fall in line.
8Any attempt to get past this lobby is stymied by the steel ministry, which has to sign off on any attempts to by go pass the lobby to bring in imported pipes.
8A case at hand is the browbeating of ONGC to step down its requirement for higher grade chrome tubulars for its operations.

How do we catch business opportunities in a downstream project?
8What our team does is to break up the facility data into its individual units. Let us take the example of IOC's Panipat refinery. We pick up the location, map it geo spatially, provide a detailed utility matrix, in terms of captive power capacity, total power requirement, gas consumption, pipeline connectivity details, grid connectivity for power, kind of substation used, along with the kind and quantum of feed used for captive power.
8We also provide the full product slate data in terms of design and actual capacity, along with all raw material and feed input data, while telling you how much of the capacity is operational and how much is planned. The affluent treatment plant is mapped.
8
We then follow this up with a detailed mapping of individual units within the refinery, say a Crude Distillation Unit or a Sulphur Recovery Unit. And for every unit, we have a few key contacts, as also the product and input slate and the technology used.
8On top of this extensive static database, we run a dynamic database which tells you where the future business opportunity is going to come, either in terms of a maintenance contract or a capital project.
8Add this up for all of IOC's refineries, pipelines and terminals, and you will have a massive easy-to-use database, collated in this manner for the first time in India, providing you with dozens of leads along with project parameters and key contacts. We do this for all companies in the downstream sector, giving you hundreds of forward looking leads as a result
8We have a trained team of mechanical engineers, who breaks down all leads into their individual components, in terms of equipment and services which will be needed going ahead. So all you have to do is to put the equipment and service you are selling into the search box and out comes all the projects where their requirements are coming up in the future.
8We also do a full mapping of all maintenance contracts within a facility, along with expiry dates of existing contracts. We alert you when these contracts come up for renewal or when fresh contracts are likely to come up.
8Business Opportunity for a Maintenance Contractor
Owner is planning to float a one year contract for the upgradation and maintenance of Advance Process Control (APC) system in an RFCC unit at its refinery.
