Indian retail marketers must keep in mind the latest projections from none other than the IEA that the electric vehicle fleet can go up to a staggering 230 million units by 2030 from a mere 3 million now
8Projections for China, which is the clear front runner in this race, shows that under one scenario, more than 90% of its two wheelers will be electrified by then, around 40% of its cars and 65% of its buses.
8In comparison, India's targets have not been set. Indian investments in electric infrastructure is among the lowest in the world.
8But once the economics of electric vehicle turns positive, as it surely will at some time in comparison the internal combustion engine, the sector will see a massive surge of investment in India.
8In today's day and age, the catch up time is short.
8In scenario planning by oil companies including private sector companies planning on an aggressive roll out of its retail outlets, it will be necessary to take the Chinese numbers as the upper case and then project the impact on petrol and diesel demand even though IEA's projected numbers for 2030 for India are much lower.

One business space in the oil & gas sector that seems to face the most uncertainty is the private retailing of petrol and diesel.
8For one, projections are showing crude prices at $90/bbl in 2020.
8These prices would clearly mean that the political establishment, despite its bravado as of now, will end up imposing price caps on public sector oil companies. How much haircut would the oil marketing companies take is a matter of conjecture.
8But one thing is for sure, the hard fought market share increases by private retailers will get reversed
8Caught between high crude prices and the looming electric vehicle revolution, the next 10 years are going to be the most volatile for private retail in India.
8Retailers may have to find innovative ways to cross subsidize retail prices or find alternative revenue streams for their outlets if crude prices continue to stay high.

As oil prices rise, it is very easy for an oil company to lose perspective the dramatic and far-reaching changes in his business environment triggered by the advent of renewable energy.
8Historical evidence seems to indicate that energy transitions are slow but this particular current transition may be much faster.
8This transition is being managed and coordinated through government policy aimed at decarbonization and reducing air pollution, whereas past transitions happened mostly naturally or accidentally without strong policy support.
8This means that the drivers of the current transition are fundamentally different from the past transformations and this induces uncertainty about how events could unfold.
8The transition this time around will be faster and quicker than anything that has happened before.
8For an oil company, moving beyond its core business is highly risky but at the same time a ‘wait-and-watch' strategy can be extremely costly.
8In this perspective, find out more about what strategies can an oil company adopt to be future ready
Click on Reports  for more Details
Up until this decade, the business strategy of oil and gas companies was straightforward: replace or grow reserves, refine and sell products as the market expands
8As oil demand prospects have become more uncertain and traditional energy sources face disruption, oil companies need a different approach.
8The alternative approach, however, is not straightforward.
8One option seems to be to move from oil to gas, a strategy adopted by top oil companies, but this is fraught with risks as well
8Moving outside of the oil & gas industry is never going to be easy as RIL is finding out.
8The IRRs just do not match up to what is achieved in its core competencies. Staying within them while being flexible with its options, could perhaps been a better choice.
8If the transition was so simple, large oil & gas players such as BP and Exxon Mobil or the Chinese super majors, with piles of cash much larger than RIL, would have quickly added retail and phone companies to their portfolios.
8In this context, it is important to take sock of the segments that an oil & gas company get into as the future becomes increasingly uncertain?
Click on Reports  to find out more. Details
In the context of energy transition,  is RIL's breakneck entry into the retail and mobile industries been the right strategy?
8Could it have planned differently?
8Should it have transited so far away from its core competencies?
8The company's refining segment, while being highly competitive, is still at risk because of the ongoing global transition in this segment.
8The petrochemical industry will stay on track but the future choice of raw material and energy will eventually be of critical importance as increasingly aggressive low cost players and disruptive technological changes come into play.

Oil & gas companies always tend to look at carbon pricing as a battle between gas vs. coal. If carbon prices are raised, it will benefit gas as it is a cleaner fuel than coal
8But the latest 2018 report on how carbon pricing is developing does not augur well for the oil & gas industry
8Deep structural changes are taking place, and these will have huge future implications
8Multiple trends are emerging in terms of how the public and private sectors are employing carbon pricing and these provide an indication of how carbon pricing could possibly unfold in the future.

As LNG prices soar, is this really the end of the road for gas based projects?
While existing gas based units feel the pinch, there are new players contemplating getting in. Here are a few examples:
8A power generation company has dropped plans for installation of an imported coal-based 1320 MW (2x660 MW) project with super-critical technology but the owner could not proceed further due to curtailment of coal export by some countries and also due to the high tariff of power to be generated. In the meanwhile, the promoter is seeking to change the project configuration from a coal-based 2x660 MW super-critical thermal plant to a 1050 MW gas based combined cycle plant at the same location due to the availability of Regassified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG). Find out more about what he has in mind, including the gas supplier he is talking to
8Then again, another power company has decided to permanently shut down its aging coal-based power plants and set up two 660 MW supercritical units instead but this plan too had to be dropped due to pollution issues. The owner is now exploring the possibility of a gas-based power station instead. Discussions are going on for the supply of gas with a supplier. Know more about both the power project owner and the gas supplier, and if you are a gas supplier find out whether you can also speak to the owner.

Green solutions are increasingly available to handle the crucial challenge when when paraffin wax, asphaltene and resin deposition downgrades your pipeline flow rates, flow size, while increasing drag, significantly straining your production systems.
8Innovative new high-tech green tech molecular disaggregators are now available that effectively controls waxes, asphaltenes and resins at a lower dosage rate whilst dramatically reducing BS&W by rapid in-line separation of the water and oil phases, breaking emulsions and eliminating foam.
8New green technologies are now increasingly used instead of harmful chemicals.
8In India, such technology will be particularly helpful in the following assets:
Mangala Field Area & Pipeline: The Mangala field area contains an OOIP of 3.6 billion barrels & daily production of 200,000 bopd of waxy crude. If applied downhole, new molecues could resolve severe wax deposition problems. Then again in the 670 km pipeline transporting the crude is heated to 650C (the Wax Appearance Temperature) to keep the crude liquid. New molecules could be applied continuously in the pipeline to lower the WAT.
Mumbai High: The offshore Mumbai High Oil field is India’s largest containing ~half of India’s recoverable reserves. Current production is >200,000 bopd of waxy crude. The crude pour point (300C) is much higher than sea floor temperature creating flow assurance issues in the subsea pipelines. Green injections could be applied to lower the crude PP in the pipeline.
Assam: The Assam region produces ~30 million barrels of oil per year. Assam crude has a PP of 300C, much higher than average winter temperatures at surface, creating handling, storage & transport problems that could be resolved using green technology.
The point to note is that the new technolgies which are coming in are
organic, requires no harzardous chemical handling protocols (with a flash point of 97°C) and can significantly impact on your HS&E concerns and OPEX spend.

Digital twin technologies are minimizing the need for testing efforts, which are usually cost-intensive and time-consuming.
8A comparison of the sensitivities calculated by the digital model on the construction of new flow meters, for example, obtained during field tests revealed an agreement of 95 percent – establishing the model as a realistic and accurate predictive tool
8Besides predicting sensitivity, the model could predict linearity of the flowmeter or in other words, constancy of the sensitivity with changing flowrates measurement accuracy.
8Not only is the digital twin concept an asset during the testing phase, the model has been extensively leveraged to modify the existing design of the flowmeter to improve quality.
8By incorporating novel component designs and innovative ideas in the model, improvement in flowmeter performance could be evaluated.
8The modified flowmeter was found to outperform the existing flowmeter product besides setting the stage for future design improvements.
8A new word of innovation has now opened up as a result
