The face-off with Iran over the Farzad B gas field seems to be not going in India's favour, for now
8India's decision to cut Iranian crude imports comes even as China increases its purchases
8Even though India is less of a buyer, Iranian crude exports are going up.
8India is no longer the second largest purchaser of crude.
8This position is taken over by South Korea
8The issue, therefore, is whether the diminishing Indian clout will help or restraint India's ability to do deals with Iran

The non-subsidized LPG market seems to be doing well as is evident from a study of a bottling plant being set up by a private player in India
8The commercial market is large and the fact that subsidy leakages are being plugged by the Modi government has worked in favour of private bottlers
8Since public sector companies have a monopoly, putting the upstream infrastructure in place is of essence for a private bottler.
8Will there be a mushrooming of privately owned LPG bottling plants in India?

LNG portfolio sales are a recent phenomena.
8The website carries here the full details of portfolio contracts by all major portfolio players in the world going up the year 2044
8An analysis shows that by early 2020 top 4 LNG portfolio suppliers (BG, Total, Shell, BP) accounts for 25 out of 42 portfolio contracts; these are the same companies who started portfolio sales strategy with BG as its main driver.
8But other players have begun getting into the list and the monopoly of the big players is set to erode over time. But GAIl does not figure in this list
A detailed list of such contracts worldwide as of 2017 are given here in terms of:
8Average annual contract volume

The website carries here a detailed investigation of the two emerging trends in the LNG market that GAIL has not been able to take advantage of, as a consequence of which it has been forced to look at bringing the bulk of the US LNG commitments to India, the only market is is familiar with.
8One is the point to point asset specific sale of LNG, which GAIL is familiar with, and the other is an integrated production, supply, trading and marketing (ISTM) sales strategy that GAIL has not been able to come to grips with.
8The ISTM approach allows for both spatial (optimization between different locations) as well as temporal (optimization between different time frames) flexibilities.
8The latest data carried here by this website will show that all the big names with equity LNG are already heavily into the portfolio business as part of their ISTM strategies, with portfolio deals stretching well into the future.
8GAIL, an equity holder for 5.8 MMTPA of LNG out of the US, seems to have missed the portfolio bus almost entirely.
8Except for placing a small quantity of LNG on a long term basis, the Indian gas major has not been able to push its way through in this highly sophisticated and competitive market.
8GAIL's approach so far has been one dimensional and ham handed: that it will somehow be able to garner sellers in Europe or somehow bring the LNG to India, either directly or via the swap mechanism.
8But GAIL seems to have been both out gunned and out maneuvered.
8GAIL has been reactive when it should have been proactive. All it really does is to float an international tender to swap or sell its LNG commitments, much the same way as it does when ordering for a spot cargo India, and then wait for someone to respond.
8But as the Indian gas major waits for a response, more agile players would have already tied up the business.
8It is too late for GAIL to learn the tricks of the trade, as it requires a sophistication of approach and specialized manpower that the company lacks.
8The company has no option but to offload its US commitments into India at a huge discount.
8A hit of USD1/mmBtu if not more -- which all but inevitable as of now -- could wipe out as much as 22% of GAIL's EBIDTA.
8Everyone is now waiting to figure out what is going to be the exact level of discount -- as that will depend on the prevailing ex-ship LNG price in India -- and by how much will GAIL's profitability be eroded by the discount.

An analysis of the deal struck by Petronet LNG Ltd with Exxon Mobil's Gorgon LNG for lowering of the price for the supply of 1.44 MMTPA of LNG for 20 years has two positives.
8The delivered price will be revised lower to $ 7.6/mmbtu as per the new formula versus $ 9.0/mmbtu earlier.
8Exxon Mobil has agreed to price Gorgon LNG at a 13.9% slope to prevailing Brent price at the port of delivery (delivered ex-ship - DES) instead of the previously decided 14.5% slope to the oil rate at the port of loading (free-on-board - FOB).
8Thus, not only is there savings from lower oil indexation, but there is an estimated USD1/mmbtu pruning too arising from shipping cost from Australia to India.

The gen set business in India is going through a slow but difficult makeover
8Instead of being a primary source of power, gen sets are now increasingly being seen as a standby resource.
8Currently, India has surplus power, with a massive 300GW of installed capacity while what is actually distributed is between 160-170GW. The plant load factor is low.
8Faulty distribution networks will mean that gensets in India will be needed for standby power for a long time to come
8But disruptive electric storage technology can become a game changer and impact the industry adversely

The fact that GAIL is seeking renegotiations of the long term LNG supply terms with its US and Australian suppliers is something to watch out for.
8All suppliers are likely to resist a price renegotiation. A signed deal is held sacrosanct particularly in the US and the covenants can only be changed mutually. If like GAIL, all buyers were to seek renegotiation of signed contracts, all hell will break lose in the LNG market.
8GAIL's ability to maneuver a price revision will depend entirely on whether it can garner support from other off takers from the terminals in which the gas major has forged supply agreements. Or else it may well risk becoming a pariah among the buyers.
8The Americans are unlikely to take kindly to GAIL's plea for a roll back to signed agreements as they have back-to-back arrangements with their financiers in relation to the fixed price elements of their contracts with buyers and any price revision will upset this fragile equilibrium.
8According to reports, GAIL wants the landed cost of their US cargoes to be lowered to around USD 7-8 per mmBtu as against the present USD 9.7. This is far too deep a price cut for any Terminal owner to agree to. Eventually, GAIL is staring at a loss, but by how much will depend on how the current round of negotiations with its US counterparts turn out for the gas major.
8If negotiations fail, it will end up in ugly litigation, which will be a big loss of credibility for GAIL.
8Petronet clearly had more leverage than GAIL in getting a discount from Gorgon LNG, as the price of gas is indexed at 14.5 per cent of prevailing oil rate, which is arguably very high and there was scope to bring it down.
8The question then arises whether GAIL can walk away from its US commitments if losses are going to be high?
8The pros of cons of reneging on the deals may have occurred to GAIL. Weighed against punishing litigation is the prospect of containing a splurge of red ink on its balance sheet from next year onwards.
