Are Indian companies in over drive when it comes to expanding ethylene and petrochemical production?
8Will the world face a glut of plastics?
8Massive capacities are coming up in the US, fueled by cheap gas. China is also setting up big coal-to-olefins projects and the Middle East is expanding rapidly too.
8By 2025, global production capacity for ethylene is projected to grow from 170 million metric tonnes to 230 million tonnes.
8Capacity for propylene could rise from 120 to 160 million tonnes. The Amercian spend will b e$164 billion on 264 new plastics facilities or expansion projects by 2023 while China will invest more than $100 billion.
8Include the rest of Asia and Europe, the figure will climb up further.
8In total, production capacity for these critical plastic feedstocks is poised to grow by 33% or more in less
than a decade.
8This is likely to be  a lot of over capacity and over production as a result

The offshore oil & gas support services industry is a big one by any yardstick and it includes lifting, floating structures, diving/IRN and transport services.
8The segment has been under decline in the last few years
8But the future is likely to be brighter.
8Significant new offshore capex is going to be needed going up to 2025 and the bulk of it is going to be new discoveries instead of in producing and underdevelopment assets.
8The website carries here an offshore capex estimate by producing, under development and new offshore opportunities as well as by water depth

Operators are trying to get off the ground with their work programmes in some of the fields awarded under the DSF Round, 2016
8An instance at point is a a five-well additional exploratory-cum-development well programme in a recently awarded marginal field.
8Each of these wells are going to cost around Rs 10 crore
8There will also be a workover attempt in the two abandoned fields
8Clearly, opportunities are noticed in these fields

The dredging market worldwide has been under turmoil in the last few years.
8For reference purposes, the website carries here details of global hopper capacity and awarded projects along with identified projects where awards are likely in the next two years.
8Demand is clearly lower than supply.
8Even then, the global market size is very large.
8There is one global company which is trying to take on the Dredging Corporation of India through lower and more competitive pricing.

Indian POL consumption has gone all topsy-turvy in August
8The official explanations are carried here on this website but they fail to explain the underlying factors properly
8Was it GST? Or is it still the lingering impact of de-monetization? Or is it a deeper, structural malaise?
8What is of interest is that some consumption led segments have been hit, such as diesel and petrol consumption, whereas others such as airline travel and commercial LPG have not been.
8Industrial consumption is down as is evident by the steep decline not just in naphtha, FO and LDO but also in petcoke consumption. The decline in the latter is worrying as it is consumed by small and medium units who can easily switch fuels. Petcoke consumption has grown at a CAGR of a massive 30% in the last five years but in August, the de-growth was a startling 30%.
8Something is broken in the system and it will take a long time to repair.

Renewable energy is directly in competition with gas in many parts of the world and India too is not the exception.
8The fact that gas based power plants could not sustain a recovery is mainly on account of low renewable energy prices. The price went down to Rs 2.44/kwh, a benchmark that cannot be matched by gas based power station. This is equal to the variable cost of coal-based power plants.
8There is also the threat of everything going electric if solar power costs continue to fall.
The website has decided to include a solar energy tracker here for the benefit of gas suppliers so that they can keep tabs on what's going on around them.
Here is an update:

8The momentum witnessed so far in solar energy capacity formation seems to be slowing down
8Solar panel prices are rising again (get the price curve here)
8And rate of installations is slowing down.
8There is an anti-dumping duty investigation and the recommendations were initially expected to be announced around September 22nd, but that has been delayed.
8Meanwhile, India has also imposed an anti-dumping duty on tempered solar glass and wind turbine castings imported from China.
8So clearly, the uncertainty is here to stay for some time to come.

The following are the highlights in the renewable energy front:
8Solar installations to reach approximately 10 GW in calendar year  in  2017 and cumulative solar installations topped 15 GW in August 2017
8Total solar installations in CY 2017 reached 5.5 GW in August
8Cumulative solar rooftop installations in India have now surpassed 1 GW. Mercom expects to see about approximately 855 MW in rooftop installations this year
8The current pipeline for utility-scale projects in various stages of construction is 13.3 GW, with 5.8 GW of tenders pending auction
8So far this year, 6.6 GW have been tendered, 4.4 GW have been auctioned, and around 1.8 GW have been canceled
8Solar tariffs breached Rs 2.50 (~$0.038)/kWh for the first time during Q2 2017, making solar cheaper than thermal power in some cases
8Solar power accounted for 13.5 billion units of total electricity produced in India during the financial year (FY) 2016-17, up from 7.4 billion units in FY2015-16
8Renewables comprise 18 percent of India's total installed capacity, with solar accounting for nearly 4.5 percent. Among renewables, solar accounts for almost 25 percent of installed capacity
8After falling by approximately 5 percent in the second quarter of 2017, for the first time in years, the average selling price (ASP) for Chinese modules had increased quarter-over-quarter by almost 12 percent as of August 2017 compared to Q2 2017
8The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has proposed the development of 7.5 GW of solar using domestic content under the CPSU Phase 2 program
8MNRE issued final guidelines for solar auctions that included some important changes to attract low bids from developers
8Significant challenges facing the industry include the GST, a pending anti-dumping decision, and DISCOMs stalling auctions to get lower rates
8Considering the current challenges, that installations could drop in 2018 by more than 20 percent
8The Office of the Directorate General of Anti-dumping & Allied Duties (DGAD) India has initiated an investigation into imported solar cells originating in or exported from China, Taiwan, and Malaysia. Initial recommendations from DGAD could take upto 12 months however

A greenfield US promoted coal-based ammonia-urea plant along with a 70 MW coal-fired power plant seems to be making progress
8The DPR is under preparation and is to be ready by November 2017
8The cost of the project is pegged at around Rs 6000 crore. Site selection has been completed.
8There are no coal-based urea plants in India though one is planned in the public sector.
8This one will be a private sector enterprise.
8The point to note is that bulk of Chinese urea capacity is based on coal-based and not gas-based technology.
8For equipment and service suppliers, this can be a big business development opportunity

There is much greater responsibility on the PNGRB to be able to curb what is being called "unaccounted gas loss" in pipeline transmission.
8GAIL has claimed an unaccounted gas loss of a massive Rs. 1239.53 crore over the life of one pipeline.
8This is to be recovered through transportation tariff which gas buyers will pay.
8There is another important reason why unaccounted gas loss needs to be reduced, and that is an environmental one. Methane is a far more powerful global warming agent than carbon dioxide

The cost-plus tariff fixation regime evolved by the PNGRB is subject to easy gaming by operators
8And it becomes a complicated task then for the regulator to determine the tariff rate
8A case at point is the preposterous demand by GAIL for an operating expense of a massive Rs 5,373 crore for one pipeline project.
8The item that stands out most in the demand is for what are called "common corporate expenses", totaling up to a massive Rs 1,180 crore. The bulk of this cost is gas marketing expenses.
8Eventually, it is the buyer of gas which will end up footing the bill

A lot of activity is going on in Mangalore Refinery of late
8The company has a heavy capex plan, with capacity being sought to be ramped up from 15 to 25 MMTPA at a cost of Rs 11,000 crore.
8The merger with HPCL will provide it further marketing access, strengthening its relatively weak distribution set up.
8There is also an overall secular improvement in refining margins which will impact the company's bottomline
8There are a host of other initiatives taken by the company, including opening new retail outlets and raising its market share of polypropylene.
8But the problem however with all refineries is what will happen if the government were to tinker with the pricing model to cushion the escalation in retail prices

ONGC conducted an experiment that involved evaluating bids for large equipments on a Life Cycle Cost (LCC) basis recently.
8The LCC concept evolved after there were allegations that suppliers backload the cost of long-life, high cost items such as gas turbines, compressors and diesel generator sets in order to be able to win contracts.
8Subsequently, the cost of equipment to the buyer goes up as spare parts, repair charges and fuel consumption are loaded on to the overall cost.
8ONGC was of the view that what mattered was the overall life cycle cost of the equipment and not the initial upfront cost when the item is tendered for.

Solar tariffs are falling rapidly, so much so that they are now equal to the variable cost of coal based thermal power projects, leave along gas based power plants run on expensive LNG.
8Over a period of time, there will be an inevitable ramping down of low efficiency thermal power capacity unless there is the unlikely possibility of a massive upsurge in the demand for electricity.
8New thermal power capacity will come up after old units are retired but under a different, more flexible, paradigm.

An analysis suggests that after the spurt in renewable capacity creation, retiring as much as 46,000 MW of coal-based capacity will not adversely affect the system flexibility in India.
8Fears of a distribution blackout on account of the inability of the grid to take the spurt of intermittent energy infusion are over hyped.
8A roadmap for retiring the capacity has been drawn up
8There is now even ambitious talk of going for a 250 GW RE system by 2022

Rapidly falling renewable energy tariffs will singe the gas power sector as well.
8Production will drop dramatically, as LNG based power plants will be found to be too expensive to survive in a merit based power offtake regime.
8Hopes of a revival of gas based power plants to take care of peaking power requirements resulting from the intermittent nature now seem to be misplaced.
8This is because new technological upgradations along will revamped power purchase agreements will allow thermal power plants to fill in the peak power requirement rather than gas based power
8Gas suppliers in India will have to look elsewhere for buyers.

The dieselization of Europe combined with lax air pollution limits and inadequate tests for car air pollution emissions have meant that exhaust emissions from diesel cars for key pollutants are significantly higher than from equivalent gasoline vehicles.
8As a result, the toxic NO2 levels in streets with a high penetration of diesel vehicles are especially high.
8Diesel vehicles are also a significant source of particulate matter. the pollutant of greatest concern to health.
8India too seems to be following the same route to dieselization as did Europe. The use of diesel has been stimulated both by regulations and fuel taxation.
8India's story is unlike that of China and the US where the share of 2% and 1% respectively.

Our website can provide accurate and fully validated investment estimations of oil & gas projects in our project monitoring software.
8We have a unique bottom-up approach, where our engineers collect information from the ground level to build the macro investment picture. The estimation model therefore is much more accurate than a top down methodology.
8Using modeling, our data can be extrapolated further to provide you two to five predictions.
8The investment data can be sliced into industrial sub-segments, and further segregated in terms of specific facilities and units, geographies, operators and promoters.
8Bankers and insurance companies will find this information of great help, when searching for clients looking for funding
8We can tell you how much investment is yet to pass through the capital approval stage, giving bankers the leads to look for potential clients. Validated phone numbers and google maps help strengthen such leads.
8Our software can disaggregate overall investments into many smaller sub-components to provide clients with a multi-faceted picture.
8The software can be a valid third party tool to keep track of projects in which banks and financial institutions have loaned money
Suppliers of equipment and services:
8They can plan better when they get a fully disaggregated picture of how investments are going to pan out.
8They can target specific business opportunities, particularly for investments which have not reached the RFQ stage
8Our contact database can be tapped to zero in on specific managers handling these investments within corporate entities
Suppliers of energy products:
8Accurate bottom-up estimation of fresh demand for energy and feedstock in new capacities that are coming within an industrial sector. Detailed energy matrices in every industrial facility allow suppliers to save on time and research to zero in on the right opportunity
8A fully validated contact list allows the supplier to immediately get in touch with a potential client
Banks and Financial Institutions
8Look for new clients requiring funding from our database of those promoters whose investments are at the planning stage but have not received capital approval
8Our contact database provides an easy way to directly get in touch with promoters
Government and research institutions
8Accurate way of validating overall investment data

The time for small scale LNG projects to cater to limited geographical demand seems to have come in India.
8The website carries here a business development opportunity for a 1.5 to 2 MMTPA of RLNG over a limited 5 year operations period
8The FRSU involved will dock at the site and suitable LNG carriers with the right parcel size will bring in LNG twice a week
8Multiple pipelines are envisaged to emanate from the site to deliver RLNG to the end users. Also, a truck loading facility will be constructed to deliver RLNG to nearby customers.
8It is also envisaged that the demand may ramp up to 2.5 - 4 MMTPA after the initial 5 years of operation. In order to handle the incremental demand, an additional dock system has been planned to be constructed within the terminal plot.
8The cost of the project is envisaged at a mere Rs 1500 crore.

By the year 2050, the conventional projection so far was that India would not only exceed China in terms of population but also in terms of the size of the economy.
8But latest international data seems to not prove the point.
8The data shows that gap in primary energy consumption continues to be very wide even by the year 2050
8Even though the rate of growth of consumption in India is almost thrice that of China between 2015 to 2050, the existing gap is so wide, that the catching up never really happens.
