Newer and hitherto undocumented facets of the global LNG trade is now emerging.
8Weather or seasonal differentials has become an important determinant of LNG demand. Demand can drop by as much as 50 mmtpa as a result.
8The narrowing of LNG price differentials would automatically assume that hub pricing is going to be the new norm but the truth is far more complicated than that. Oil-indexed pricing is going to stay, but for reasons which are surprisingly different from what was through to be the case earlier.
8Find out why it is no longer possible to accurately project demand from the behavior of the biggest LNG buyers any longer.
8Also, find our more on how the initial import surge in newer markets may dry up sooner than later.
8Also check how Qatar is turning its interest towards the smaller importers and how, three years down the line, they constitute a bigger chunk of  total cargoes than some key markets.

Analysts have under-estimated LNG demand in 2017.
8There is an upsurge in demand in Asia. China and South Korea are leading the charge.
8Asian LNG spot prices have stayed higher than 2016 in all of 2017 but for a brief period in July-August, 2017.
8In the face of rising demand, the 2017-2016 price differential is getting wider.
8Europe did not turn out to be the "sink" market that everybody had anticipated.
8Find out about how the differentials are going to look going ahead, and by how much demand is more than forecast in key demand centers, including Southern Europe.

While China grabs the headlines for its huge appetite for incremental LNG, the focus is in fact on a bunch of emerging new importers who account for nearly 60% of the net global LNG demand growth since 2014.
8The point to note however is that the introduction of new buyers makes demand more flexible rather than certain.
8Find out why these bunch of importers most likely introduce greater medium-term demand uncertainty (demand elasticity over a one- to three-year time frame) while actually reducing shorter-term market flexibility over a one-year time horizon as they lock in demand.

GAIL could have possibly gained by hanging in to its earlier resolve to send its US LNG cargoes to India instead of tying them up in "no loss" short term deals with other traders and suppliers.
8Newer dynamics have now emerged out of the recent jump in Asian LNG prices on the back of a spurt in demand. Projections are that prices are likely to stay high going ahead.
8While other international traders and suppliers have developed integrated production, supply, trading and marketing (ISTM) strategies capable of absorbing price fluctuations in a volatile market, GAIL failed to do so.
8Find out how the impending offtake of US LNG cargoes and an inability to see beyond the immediate term, forced a panic reaction from the GAIL brass.

Even as India seems to be going up in the "ease of doing business" index of the World Bank, it has slipped to the 92nd position from among 125 countries in a high regarded UN accredited ranking that is determined on the basis of an index that takes into account a country's energy security, energy sustainability and energy equity.
8The following definitions are taken into account while determining the ranking:
Energy security: Effective management of primary energy supply from domestic and external sources, reliability of energy infrastructure, and ability of energy providers to meet current and future demand.
Energy equity: Accessibility and affordability of energy supply across the population.
Environmental sustainability: Encompasses achievement of supply- and demand-side energy efficiencies and development of energy supply from renewable and other low-carbon sources.
8China, Vietnam, South Africa and Brazil have higher scores than India. Pakistan is at 102 and landlocked Nepal is at a very poor 117.
8This is a document that makes for interesting reading for policy makers, particularly at a time when a lot of effort is being made towards energy equity by pushing the LPG scheme to the rural poor.
8The pertinent point to note is the India poor ranking does take into account India's commitment to reduce carbon emissions and reduce import dependency on crude oil as well as other policy measures.
8Yet India's rankings are down because it is a relative ranking. Clearly, other countries may be doing more than what India is.

8Although drilling demand seems to be stabilizing, the magnitude of the order book and the schedule of deliveries will continue to put substantial pressure on fleet utilization over the next  few quarters. During the census period, fleet utilization stayed at 60% in 2017 – matching the record low set with last year’s 60%.
8Rig owners are still actively looking to adjust supply to the current level of demand. Newbuild delivery delays, quicker cold-stacking decisions and accelerated retirement of aged and obsolete assets are being actively used to reduce operating costs and provide some support for dayrates.

How much discount can an Indian agent of a multinational elicit on a contract with ONGC?
8Ideally, the discount is an internal matter between the agent and the hiring company.
8When a bidder quotes for an equipment or service, the price comes bundled with the commission to be paid to the agent.
8So in effect, when a tender is finalized at a negotiated price, it is up to the winning bidder to fix the commission, as the amount to be paid is on the bidder's account not on ONGC.
8But is that really always the case? No so at all

GAIL performance is in that peculiar "uncertain" phase at this juncture.
8The overall call on the GAIL stock is negative. Sell orders are out.
8The GAIL brass claims that US LNG volumes for 2018 (supplies commence from February, 2018) have been all taken care of, but the long-term take or pay nature of such contracts continues to be a worry.
8A hit of USD1/mmBtu wipes out a quarter of the FY19E EBITDA.
8Then again, even as petrochemical volumes are up, they are hit by severe competition.

ONGC's much-touted programme of hiring out small and marginal fields through the service contract route to the private sector has turned out to be a failure as is evident from the company's willingness to provide yet another two-year extension of the assessment period for four small fields -- Mulkipalli, Chintalapalli, Magatapalli and Medapadu -- awarded to the consortium of KEI-ROS Petroleum & Energy Pvt Ltd and Apollo Energy Pvt Ltd.
8The extension is being provided till 2019. And this is despite the fact that no significant progress was made on the ground since the last extension.
8The irony is that these fields were leased out in September, 2007, exactly 10 years from now. The original assessment period was until September, 2009.
8Six extensions were already given on some pretext or other.

Gujarat is a test case of how gas consumption will eventually pan out across India.
8And the story is best encapsulated in how Gujarat State Petronet Ltd's pipeline volumes are growing and the segments of the Indian industry where this gas is going into.
8The gas is headed for the steel, petrochemicals, refining and tiles and sanitary ware manufacturing, among others
8Even as volumes are being gained, they are falling too in some segments, pointing to the churning that is going on within the Indian industry.
8Eventually, cheaper electricity from renewable energy, petroleum gasification, imported ethane and LPG along with cheaper liquid fuels and coal will remain viable alternatives to gas in India.

HPCL registered a disappointing GRM in Q2 2017-18.
8The GRM was at least $3/bbl lower than estimate
8Sub-optimal GRM was attributed to monsoon-related lower offtake of bitumen, which led to higher production of fuel oil.
8Since this was a weather-related problem, the expectation is that the performance will improve going ahead.
