What are the major risks to existing businesses if the government were to introduce step changes in policies to accelerate decarbonization? 8The point to note is that the falling cost of low carbon technology allows policymakers to consider options that weren’t viable just a few years ago. 8But for those yet to act, there is the risk of knee-jerk climate policy responses at some point in future. 8And this is going to hurt some businesses more than others. 8Technology innovation and deployment will determine whether countries can achieve the Paris Agreement’s two degrees goal. Emerging technologies and new business models are already disrupting the energy system. 8These technologies include smart power and heating systems in buildings, autonomous electric vehicles, advanced biofuels and 3D printing. 8It is pertinent to note that currently few companies or financial institutions are comprehensively able to disclose the financial impacts of climate change to their business. There is a big rush of smaller refineries to move up the ladder in terms of size and complexity before it is too late. 8The viability of small sized refineries is threatened by: -- Spiraling prices of Crude oil (leading to vulnerable refinery margins) -- Inefficient infrastructure & poor product quality -- Lack of enough volumes of feedstock for petrochemical plants -- Increased cost related to regulatory & environmental compliance cost Click on Reports for more

Clear evidence is now coming in that the current decarbonization rate is inconsistent with the aim of keeping global warming confined to two degree centigrade. 8Global decarbonization rate fell by 2.6% in 2016. 8In future, assuming a global average economic growth of 2.1%, carbon emissions need to fall by over 4% every year on average to hit the two degrees target. 8The considerable gaps between current progress, the Paris Agreement’s national targets and the global two degrees goal highlight the risks to business and society. 8Find out how China and UK have been among the best performers in reducing carbon intensity in 2016 whereas India had lagged far behind. The UK has emerged as a leader in 2016 with a decarbonizing rate of 7.7% while China is among the fastest decarbonisers in the world. 8The Indian record is poor, even though its carbon intensity in terms of (tCO2/$mGDP) is much lower than of China in 2016. 8These readings are of importance for policy planners not just in the government but also in companies looking at de-risking their industries. The survey has found that there is indeed a minimum average spend on cooking fuel among the poor. 8The figure however is lower than the refill price of an LPG cylinder. 8If the government finds the cost of plugging the subsidy gap too high or finds it problematic to put the distribution infrastructure in place, going electric through distributed renewable energy systems can be an ideal solution. 8If carbon footprints are also taken cognizance of, green energy can be a better solution than going through the LPG route. 8Policy planners are still drawing a blank when handling data on energy consumption at the disaggregated level in India. 8The country is too vast and measurement tools are still very antiquated. 8Household energy usage data is rare to find and there are not many policy makers working to figure out how to keep kitchen fires burning in a safe and cost effective way among India's beleaguered poor. The largest ever government-sponsored field study on LPG coverage across India has come out with a startling set of facts: 8Bulk of the rural poor access a lot of free fuel such firewood and cow dung to keep the kitchen fires burning 8A lot of them find the initial cost of acquiring LPG and the renewal cost to be far too high 8Then again, all of them say that the distribution infrastructure is not in place to ensure time refills. 8The point to note is that the poor in India cannot afford LPG even at current subsidized prices 8Subsidies have to be raised further, instead of bringing them down. That is the startling truth. 8The survey also nails the lie that the oil marketing companies have adequate distribution infrastructure in place. 8These findings fly against the government's assertion that it will be able to eventually universalize LPG cover across its vast population. 8It will not happen soon. Not in the way it is planned and implemented today. Click on Reports to download the full survey.Details
A big Indian IT company is using an artificial intelligence platform to provide an “enterprise Google” kind of search capability along with personalization of all E&P data for an oil company. 8But how will it do it? 8It will reduce all the E&P data, including typed documents, into digital formats and then allow its intelligent processes to take over. 8Its AI platform is reportedly a combination of cognitive computing services for the development of digital virtual agents, predictive systems, cognitive process automation, visual computing applications, knowledge virtualization, robotics and drones. 8The platform has been developed using machine learning, natural language processing, genetic and deep learning algorithms, semantic ontologies, pattern recognition and knowledge-modeling technologies 8All this results in solutions that deliver cognitive enhancement to experience and productivity, accelerate processes through automation and, at the highest stage of maturity, reach autonomous abilities. 8Time to give their marketing executive a call? Are crude prices set to tighten further? 8It looks like that is how it will go. 8The latest Baker Hughes oil rig count showed 1 rig increase to 737 in the US and only the second weekly increase in the past eleven weeks. In fact since the rig count posted a 2017 high in mid-August oil rigs operating have fallen by 31 over that timeframe. 8Comments by the Saudi Crown Prince reinforcing production cuts, reports from the UAE that they will continue to comply with output restraints and news of the extension of the Oil Producers Agreement beyond March of next year should leave the bull camp in control. 8Another issue that should lend some fresh support to crude oil prices is a weekend article (from a well-known analyst) suggesting that the oil market is indeed moving from rebalancing to "tightening". Surprisingly, India has a much higher reserves to production ratio than the US, according the latest global data report released by a multinational company yesterday. 8This clearly shows that India's rate of gas production can go up significantly when the impetus picks up. Unless output is up, reserves can get stranded when decarbonization gathers momentum. 8For policy makers, global data points allow for a better understanding of India's position with respect to its peers such as China or even neigbouring countries such as China. This allows for better policy making. 8Even though India is very much at the centre of the global LNG drive, it does not figure amongst the top 10 LNG exporting countries. Its gas reserves, though going up rapidly, are also much lower than most other big players in the industry. 8Comparative analysis of bio diesel production puts India at the bottom of ladder among big countries.
