A national and global slowdown in key verticals have forced L&T to cut a massive 14,000 jobs
8The $16-billion diversified conglomerate said on Tuesday the step was an attempt to “right size” its strength in the face of business slowdown.
8Among other reasons, digitization of operations also caused redundancies that led to downsizing, thus raising the specter of jobless growth of the Indian industry.
8Weak industrial demand and low capacity utilization continue to challenge the business environment, with revenues impacted by lower offtake in construction and mining equipment, delayed defence ordering and end-stage execution of current realty projects
8Q2 margins have been adversely affected by inventory write down in shipbuilding and cost overruns  as well as under-recoveries in the metallurgical and material handling business
8Yet the hydrocarbon segment of the company seems to standing up pretty well despite the slowdown, making up 14% of the order inflow whereas it makes up just 8% of the total order book.
8Some credit goes to L&T aggressive hydrocarbon marketing teams not just in India but across the world where it has earned a reputation for good work.

City Gas Distribution companies seem quite worried about competition using their infrastructure to market PNG and CNG once their exclusivity periods come to an end.
8The worry emerges from the regulator's attempt to fix third party access rights and transportation rates for CNG and gas shortly.
8There are worries that PNGRB may try and benchmark costs on normative basis without taking into account actual costs, particularly the high cost of land acquisition in some cases
8The post tax rate of return at 12% set by the regulator has been found to be too low, and most companies want the return raised to 14 or 15%
8There are worries that benchmarking of costs will not take into account the additional capex of last mile connectivity of domestic PNG networks
8Those who think of making an entry into lucrative city gas markets through third party common carrier arrangements must be careful before going in, because existing entities are capable of raising non-tariff barriers or using the legal system to hold up connectivity
Click on Reports for a summary of all the views that have poured in on the PNGRB;s draft regulations on third party transportation rates in CGD networks

While one scenario looks at continued use of coal -- by using high technology ultra super critical turbines -- by the Indian power sector, another sees a dramatic decarbonization of the sector.
8If the world were to stay within the 1.5-2% climate change target,  there will have to be an unexpected decarbonisation of the Indian electricity grid, with coal fired power generation falling from 75% in 2014 to 52% by 2040, and a radical 12% by 2040 under what is called the "450 Scenario".
8Following the well-established path of transformation evident in China, India's planner may look at rapid grid and energy efficiency gains combined with diversification from coal into all alternative sources available.
8Beyond the policy implications of the energy-water nexus plus the health and climate change drivers, the financial driver of increasingly cost competitive renewable energy has become clear over 2016.
8A second key economic motivation for India improving domestic self-sufficiency is that India’s oil and gas imports are forecast to drain an annual US$460bn from the economy by 2040, an unaffordable
sevenfold increase on US$65bn in 2015.

One of the biggest boost gas in India can come from the power sector. But the website carries here two different scenarios, both of which do not see gas playing a big role in India
8One believes that ultra super critical technology which will burn coal more efficiently will resolve India's carbon emission problems arising out of its need for more power generation capacity. Another view point believes that India's renewable energy thrust will plug the gap.
8The use of sub-critical and super critical coal technology in the power sector may come under the lens of the government because of high carbon emissions
8The Indian government is now a signatory to bringing down emissions and it will have to look carefully at the coal option to generate power.
8But new ultra super critical low emission power projects can be a preferred option for power generation if gas prices continue to remain unaffordable
