8OPEC predicted that global oil markets won’t rebalance until late next year after boosting forecasts for supplies from the U.S. and other rivals. OPEC's  monthly report raised its outlook for non-OPEC supply in 2018 by 300,000 barrels a day. As a result, an initiative by OPEC and Russia to clear a global oil glut by cutting production -- previously seen succeeding in the third quarter of 2018 -- will take effect more slowly. The glass is either half full or half empty, depending upon which side of the climate change debate you are on.
8Latest research done by fossil fuel adherents indicates that demand for crude will continue to increase right up to 2040
8And not just that, India will remain one of the biggest destination for crude cargoes in the world, with the highest rate of import growth till then
8Huge refining capacities have to come up in India, the study has reasoned.
8Due to increasing demand for clean and high-quality products, secondary capacity additions have become a key gauge of the refining sector’s capability to meet demand
8For those who think the advent of electric cars is going to dent this capacity creation are apparently on the wrong side of the divide

Unbundling GAIL has been a cause of much debate and friction in India
8Is it good or bad for the country, eventually?
8While apologists have their reasons and whether or not open access measures eventually result in an efficient actively competitive natural gas market is the final proof of whether mechanisms for unbundling have been successful or not.
8What is more, the unbundling process is of great importance, and depending on the extent to which unbundling takes place, it can be split into different categories
8If at all GAIL has to be unbundled, can it be done through a gradual process?
8The reform of the natural gas market is a long-term and difficult process, requiring a particular political environment, relevant infrastructure and associated government policy.
8India is way behind in the process

The Middle East is not just a crude hub but has now emerged as a global centre for trading of refined products
8Historically, prices for refined fuel products in the Middle East have been measured in terms of their relative value to the predominant Asian trading hub, Singapore – primarily because of the lack of local spot market liquidity in the past.
8But the dynamics have changed permanently.

A large refinery in India, operating multiple crude & vacuum unit complexes, wanted to systematically increase the TAN operating limits of their crude feed, as a way to provide greater flexibility in crude selection, lower overall cost of crude, and improve refinery margins
8A phosphate-ester based corrosion inhibitor and its synergistic blend of phosphate-ester and phosphonate salt were suggested as it had the lowest potential to foul the vacuum column packed beds.
8The results were that corrosion rates, in the highest risk loops, were controlled within acceptable limits.
8There was no measurable increase in the pressure drop in any of the vacuum column packed beds

8With the United States increasingly perceived as an unpredictable ally, Europe perceived as inward looking, and Asian powers perceived as only lightly engaged in the Middle East, many participants expressed the view that Saudi Arabia was left with Russia as a vital partner for collaboration on issues ranging from oil market management to conflicts across the Middle East.
8Counterview: There is increasing skepticism about whether US shale can indeed perform as a highly elastic source of supply—a “swing producer”—in the global oil market. Why is that so?

8A new balance sheet based financing model for LNG terminals is coming up, and two of the biggest companies in the world are setting up such a terminal on this concept instead of setting up a separate project company and raising debt on project-finance basis. If this takes off, a lot of similar projects can go on stream globally and particularly in the US. Find out more on how this can dramatically change the LNG game.

GAIL's attempt at playing the volatile LNG market will be tested by at least one of its swap arrangements.
8The attempt by GAIL to take delivery of oil-indexed LNG in return for Henry Hub based FOB sale from its US commitment will be watched keenly by analysts.
8Most believe that deal was made on the basis of horse sense instead of any complicated predictive modeling.
8Will such kind of gambling really work?
8The fact is that after the oil price crash, GAIL's 5 MMTPA of US LNG offtake commitments are no longer viable for the Indian market and swapping will not mitigate or take away this underlying problem
8Unfortunately, GAIL has not invested enough in acquiring the prerequisites to become a global gas trader and it faces many disadvantages that its competitors or counter parties do not
8GAIL is both outgunned and out maneuvered.

More than India, it is Pakistan that needs gas supplies through a pipeline network from Turkmenistan via the proposed Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline.
8Like India, Pakistan too is hobbled by a two-part gas price policy, one for domestically produced gas and another for LNG.
8The demand-supply gas is big and Pakistan, like India, has an affordability problem.
8There have been some reforms in Pakistan, such as making oil & gas a concurrent subject, that Indian policy makers perhaps emulate to get state government into a more participative mode.
8Eventually, economics will hopefully triumph politics for Pakistan to push ahead with the pipeline
8A deeper understanding of the Pakistan gas sector will keep policy planner in India motivated to keep pushing for the TAPI as well as the Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline.

IOC has become extra cautious after facing an unusually high amount of political flack for tying up with the Adanis for the Dhamra LNG project.

8It is now putting in a conscious effort at future-proofing its relationship with the Adanis.

Are independent bio-diesel operations a successful business model.
8The cost of bio-diesel is significantly cheaper than unsubsidized diesel as of now
8Find out what is the differential
8Bio diesel complies with new emission norms and can be used in existing vehicles and bio diesel and diesel are seamlessly interchangeable.
8Is the setting up independent bio-diesel retail outlets a viable proposition?
8What bio-diesel probably needs to really take off is some kind of policy push from the government

The real driver of global oil prices is not demand pressure but endogenous supply shocks.
8Exogenous disruptions, like the OPEC deal to keep production capacity out, also really do not have an impact
8Only if basic oil production capacity is hurt or curtailed or is less than what is required, will oil prices be impacted
8So if capacity continues to be created, as is the case with US shale, prices may not move up much, unless constrained by lack of adequate capacity creation in conventional oil & gas resources.

OECD crude inventories have fallen and oil futures curves are in backwardation. Does that mean OPEC has achieved its mission?
8The answer seems to be an emphatic "no".
8There is little indication that the backwardation in futures curves is going to stop US production from expanding. In 2018, US production will likely hit an all-time high, surpassing the cycle peak reached before the price war in 2014 and above the 10 million barrel mark last hit in 1970.
8Simultaneously, OPEC and it non-OPEC partners last week announced they will extend the deal to cut supply from October 2016 by 1.8mn barrels to the end of 2018.
8But the expectation is that compliance in this extended deal will fall short of expectations.
8Surpluses are going to back again, and Q4 2017 is likely to be the last quarter of deficit for a while.

For reference purposes, the website carries here data on break even price data for international oil majors in 2018-19
8The point to note is that industry has driven cash flow break-evens from $90B to $53B since the oil price crash, heralding a tentative increase in investment
8Quite a few companies do not make the cash flow break even point of above $50/bbl, pushed by a high dividend policy
8BP's cost is higher than Shell and is above the breakeven point
8For many, if the cash flow model is changed to the basic breakeven level, then the cost is significantly lower, at between $30 to $40/bbl
8How do ONGC's domination oil stand up to these breakeven levels?
8That is an interesting question to ask

Lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions are now increasingly used as a tool to fight the case against the use of gas.
8While gas is relatively cleaner fuel than coal, it is not clean enough to fight emissions, is the new argument.
8Fossil fuel technologies are way more carbon-emitting than fossil fuel based fuels
8All renewable technology fuels are 1,000 g CO2eq/kWh lower than their fossil-fuelled counterparts (without CCS).
8Increasingly, this is going to be an important component of future conversations.

Can India's transportation sector use long haul LNG-based gas engines to beat the lack of a gas distribution system?
8In combustion, there is no difference between LNG and CNG, but there are significant differences in the operational range
8With new large haul, highly efficient gas engines, LNG can provide a range of as much as 1,100 kilometres for a typical truck on a flat road whereas CNG usually provides a range of up to 500 kilometres.
8So it is possible to use gas-powered trucks to deliver medium haul transport solutions with return trips without refueling.
