Oil India (OIL) reported 9% YoY decline in EBITDA mainly led by lower oil and gas realisations.
8Lower other income and higher depreciation further dragged PAT down.
8OIL’s profits remain largely unaffected if crude price is above US$ 47/bbl as the subsidy sharing burden kicks in above this price.
8However, at lower crude prices, negatives from lower net realisation outnumber the benefits from reduction in oil under-recovery.
8No subsidy sharing is expected by upstream players for crude below US$ 47/bbl.
8Operationally performance should be mixed for OIL going ahead. Oil volumes will remain flat, however, gas volumes will increase at ~6% p.a. Crude prices are likely to remain range-bond.
8So in reality nothing much is expected out of the company as of now unless the company's new chairman works hard to bring about the requisite changes.

The length of the newbuilding orders coming to light during the past days is certainly reflecting signs of life in the industry but, with some very few exceptions, neither the type nor the size of the respective vessels being ordered is generating signs of a market that is getting stronger fundamentally.
8At the same time, newbuilding prices continue to point downwards, further suppressing the profit margin of those builders that are fortunate enough to secure some business and who are at the moment appear to be forced to choose staying in business and continuing  operations over squeezing decent premiums on the respective new-building deals.
8The outlook continues to remain grim for the industry as of the moment.

The LNG shipping industry seems to be at the point of inflexion.

8But new LNG production is coming on stream, with T9 of Malaysia LNG, Petronas FLNG1 and train 2 operations of Gorgon and Sabine Pass set to go on stream.
8Looking to 2017, significant additional production is expected from Gorgon and Sabine Pass together with new production from Whetstone.
8All in all, approximately 135 million tonnes of new production equivalent to 52% of current LNG production is expected to deliver between now and 1Q 2021.
8During recent months a number of market participants has chosen to take shipping coverage for 2017.
8Up to 16 vessels in the global spot fleet have been fixed for periods of 6-18 months starting between September and February. This tightens the outlook for structural availability into 2017.
8As new LNG arrives and prompt availability of shipping tonnage declines, charterer interest in period contracts is expected to grow bringing the shipping business ever closer to its inflection point.
8Discipline among ship owners continues to be maintained with only 6 LNG carriers (approximately 1% of the global fleet) ordered this year to date.

The Indian refining and petrochemical industry is watching with much interest the on-going merger process of OMPL with Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL).
8The general expectation is that the merger will benefit both the entities given the synergies between their operations.
8The key feedstock (i.e. naphtha and aromatics streams) for the operations of OMPL is sourced from MRPL, which would be met captively post the amalgamation. It would also provide flexibility to the management in sourcing of crude so as to maximise the yield depending upon the market dynamics and crack spread available for the respective products.
8With the amalgamation, the plants of MRPL and OMPL can be operated at optimum utilisation to allow for optimisation of Gross Refining Margin (GRM) and maximisation of combined margins.
8However, the merger process has been delayed due to pending regulatory approvals. Meanwhile, OMPL has reported sizeable losses post-commissioning on a standalone basis, leading to significant erosion in its net worth.
8The completion of the merger in the near term remains critical for OMPL to benefit from the combined synergies and improve its financial profile.
8OMPL will now have low feedstock supply risks owing to the adjacent operating refinery of MRPL and the healthy demand indicators globally for the company’s key products, i.e. paraxylene and benzene. The market risks are expected to further reduce for paraxylene with the setup of a new downstream facility by JBF Industries Limited in the company’s vicinity in the near term. The company also benefits from its presence in Mangalore SEZ which would result in lower taxation in initial years of operations apart from other fiscal incentives.
8But the worry is that the company’s profitability is exposed to the movement in the crack spreads between naphtha/aromatic streams and the finished products which are highly volatile and cyclical in nature, as well as to import duty differentials between finished products and feedstock, and exchange rate movements.

Is India's move towards a gas-based economy coming too late?
8Has the world moved to a post-gas based industrial economy?
8Will the massive ongoing technological revolution in battery storage, electric and hydrogen based cars, distributed renewal energy production and driverless cars make gas as redundant as liquid fuels?
8Will the world have to shut down not just coal but also gas based activity in order to be able to keep global warming from spiraling out of control?
8There is an increasing body of research that seems to suggest that gas may not be a great substitute for coal to keep emissions down. In fact, all hydrocarbon emissions will have to be brought down dramatically to keep warming under control.
8The research on this is already well established and it is time for Indian planners to look beyond the active lobbying by the oil & gas industry to push for gas as a substitute for coal or liquid fuels to see what is around the corner.
8There is no denying the fact that gas is going to be imported into India and that is always going to be expensive. If transformative technological changes are taking place that will help us get away from gas, we must look at them first before committing to invest heavily in a gas backbone for the Indian economy that can become redundant soon after it is built.
8What the government should do is to put together a Committee of Experts to look at "India beyond Gas".
Click on Reports for more Details
India's push to move to a gas-based economy -- so as to bring down COP 21 mandated emissions levels by a committed 33-35% by 3030 -- can provide outstanding business development opportunities in the medium to long term.
A look of the following data can show how billions of dollars of investments are possible:
8The petroleum minister said that domestic pricing of gas is based on on gas on gas contracts. Indian companies have signed US contracts on Henry Hub prices. India is diversifying away from Qatar to other suppliers such as US and Australia
8Around 34 MMTPA of additional LNG capacity is coming up
8The National Gas Grid will double to 30,000 km in five years
8$ 8 billion will be spent in attendant gas based  infrastructure along the Jagdishput-Haldia and Bokaro-Dhamra pipeline network
8The Surat-Paradip Pipeline, Mallavaram-Bhopal-Bhilwara-Vijaipur Pipeline, Mehsana-Bhatinda-Jammu-Srinagar pipelines are coming up, all aimed at pushing gas deeper into India.
8Consumption of gas is slated to double to 240 MMSCMD in the next five years
835 new cities will have CGD connections in the next two years
8A large number of new gas-based fertilizer units are coming up, each with an investment of Rs 6000 crore
8If LNG prices stay low, gas utilization in the power sector will go up
8Gas based power plants will complement 175 GW of renewal energy projects coming up by 2022
8The big emphasis is in the use of LNG and CNG in the transportation sector. It is projected that 25% of India's transportation fuel requirement will come from gas.
8Indian refineries which use naphtha and Fuel Oil as primary fuels will switch over to gas as will new petrochemical hubs which are coming up

No one needs a hike in oil prices more than the countries which make up the OPEC
8But attempts to cut production to raise prices are not bearing fruit and the frustration on this count is already evident.
8OPEC firmly believes that rebalancing is underway: Non-OPEC supply is falling while global demand is expected to grow at healthy levels of around 1.2 million barrels per day in 2016 and 2017
8But the huge stock overhang of 300 million barrels over and above the five year average is not helping prices to go down.
8In the long run, OPEC seems to have been enthused by its latest estimate that global demand will scale 109 million barrrels by 2040, a healthy increase of 16 million barrels per day over current levels.
8And to be able to maintain this level of supply, the world will need an investment of a massive $ 10 trillion.
8Juxtaposed against this background is the immediate fall in global capex in 2015 and 2016, with the trend possibly continuing in 2017.
8There is no mention however in the OPEC president Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, Qatar's Minister of Energy and Industry's speech yesterday at the 17th OPEC Conference of global warming and its terrible consequences or of the call to put a halt to production from new fields to keep the global temperature increase limited to 2 degrees.
8Nor is there any mention of transformative technology that can halt the rising appetite for oil and gas across the world
