Dec 2016

We want to convey  season's greetings to all of you and wish you a happy new year
8This has been a good year for us. We consolidated our enterprise, perfected our project and pricing software and launched over 200 products across the entire energy chain. This is indeed very encouraging, even as all the benefits of our new launches are yet to be wholly reaped.
8Today we provide a mix of highly analytical macro-level information that is relevant to policy makers and highly focused, forward looking business intelligence which is aimed at the equipment and service suppliers in the petroleum sector.
2017 will see a consolidation of our project database
8As we move ahead, we will consolidate our project data, so much so that we have a forward looking RFQ update -- along with key contact information -- on every possible business opportunity in the petroleum sector, worth more than Rs one crore. For our subscriber, a deal will just be a phone call away.
8We employ and train mechanical engineers on the dynamics of petroleum projects in India and how they unfold in the upstream, midstream and downstream segments. We emphasize on building and cultivating contacts, not just with the owners but with EPCM and EPC contractors and sub contractors. We choose our contacts from a database of 25,000 people in our mailing list, who receive our mailers five days a week. There is an element of trust between our contacts and us, and that is the vital key which helps us elicit information before anyone else does.
8We track a project over multiple parameters, from pre-planning to equipment and technology selection, site selection, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, capital approval, basic engineering, contracting, detailed engineering, installation, pre-commissioning and commissioning activities. At every stop, we look for a business opportunity, for a future RFQ date for an equipment or a service as well as key contacts handling such an opportunity.  We don't give up when a project is completed, we follow it through planned and unplanned maintenance programmes, alerting you every time there is a shutdown. For we know that a shutdown provides a business opportunity as well.
8We don't only provide  project information, we also give you multi-parameter matrices of the industrial unit that is being built and the overall industrial facility in which the unit is placed. In an industrial facility, like a refinery, we put together key contacts in up to 10 disciplines and for every unit, be it a CDU or SRU, we give you a few contacts as well.
We will push our petroleum pricing database
82017 will also see a consolidation of our domestic petroleum pricing database. We have already put together a comprehensive international database for industrial fuels, but going ahead, we will build a strong database for domestic industrial fuels, from gas to naphtha to bitumen. We will provide company-wise, product-wise, city-wise daily price curves for these products.
8We will also provide Kcal-wise comparison of prices of competing industrial fuels on a daily basis as this will help our readers to decide which fuel is more competitive in the face of increasing price volatility across different products. We already have the software in place and we are now in the process of hiring a team to complete this exercise.
We will populate our general database in 2017
8In 2017 we resolve to consolidate thousands of bits of petroleum data into an easy-to-use database. Instead of going through complicated search procedures to find a valuable piece of data, we will make it easy for you to look for your information through a proactive tree diagram. All you have to do is to open up the right branch and click on it for your data
Among the other already launched products that we hope to consolidate as we go into 2017 are:
8Project News, Daily News Service, Customized News Service; Monthly E&P, Gas, Midstream, Downstream, Regulatory Deviations and Custom Made Reports; Full Spectrum E&P Consultancy; Geological, Wells, Rigs, Seismic Survey Databases; ProjectsTrackers on E&P, Oil & Gas Processing, Terminals & Pipelines, Refineries and Chemicals and Petrochemicals; Forecasts on Investment, Demand, Equipment & Services Requirements; Analyst Support; Trade Database; Contact Database; Archives etc.

As a result of lower offtake and higher spot prices, the Petronet LNG Ltd stock had taken a hit recently
8But brokerage houses have put up a "buy" sign on the stock of late
Here are the reasons why the stock is now preferred:
8As against expanded capacity of 15mmtpa, Petronet has got firm usage for 16.75mmtpa. It already operated at annualized rate of 12.4mmt in 1HFY17. So utilization levels in Dahej is not going to be a problem at all
8There is not much of a threat to PLL's business from upcoming LNG terminals either.
8While GSPC’s Mundra terminal may be completed in mid-2017, the lack of pipeline connectivity may remain a problem for next two years.
IOC's Ennore terminal is also likely to be completed in 2018. There is no progress however on pipeline there too.
8Then again the Dhabol terminal is operating a very low capacity due to the lack of a breakwater facility. The tender for breakwaters is yet to be awarded. After award, it would take four years for completion.

LNG prices are not expected to stay high for too long and they will certainly correct downwards
8The temporary mismatch will go once the winter thaws
8Research shows that Henry Hub prices have delinked from WTI since 2009 due to abundance in supply of shale gas. The average slope over 2000-08 stood at 13.2%, and this has come down to 6.5% in 2016.
8A total of 142 mmtpa of LNG liquefaction capacity is under various stages of construction.
8This makes us believe that LNG prices would remain structurally weak for a long time, even if oil prices were to rise.

Spot LNG prices in Asia-Pacific increased from USD4.2/mmbtu in May 2016 to USD8.0 in December 2016 and as much as USD9.2 for February delivery.
8As a result, LNG import by India in November declined to 1.5 mmt, 5% below monthly import in 1HFY17.
8The price rise has been fostered by a sudden rise in LNG demand due to a severe winter: Japan, the largest consumer of LNG, imported 7.54mmt of LNG in November 2016, up 12.7% YoY due to the severe winter.China has also been battling a severe winter, importing 2.66 mmt of LNG in November (+47% YoY). Imports by China in December could be even higher at 3.33mmt.
8Prices also went up in the midst of supply outages.
8Chevron’s Gorgon LNG Train 1 has remained shut intermittently after it started in March 2016. The Gorgon Train 2 was also shut temporarily in early December.
8Since resumption of exports in June 2016, Chevron’s 5.2 mmtpa Angola LNG terminal has also been battling a series of unplanned outages.

When business cycles turn, cyclical industries can struggle to retool their organizations for the new environment. For instance, today’s oil and gas companies were developed in a time of resource scarcity.
8With prices now at around $50 a barrel, the old organizational blueprint is no longer sustainable.
8While companies have cut their support functions since 2014, the overall organizations supported by these functions are also smaller now.
8But further reductions in corporate functions will be needed, as well as new organizational models.
8A more agile organization, with fluid teams and looser hierarchies, can lower costs and create greater responsiveness to today’s vastly different markets.
8Two models are seen arising.

How did the ban on old notes helped petroleum consumption?
8Well, there was more than anticipated demand for petrol and diesel on account of the fact that old notes were allowed for purchase of petroleum products at retail outlets through the month.
8Some amount of hoarding too took place on account of the anticipated ban in use of old notes
8But what explains the continued demand for other products such as LDO or Bitumen or Petcoke in November after demonetization was announced?
Click on Reports for more
Details
Clearly, demonetization has had a positive impact on the consumption of petroleum products in November.
8India’s fuel demand surged by 12.1% in November this year aided by a sharp rise in petrol and diesel consumption.
8Except for SKO and Lubes & greases, which recorded a negative growth of 31.8% and 2.9% respectively during the current month, all other products recorded positive growth.
8MS consumption was up 14.2% while HSD sales went up 10.5%, way above the average of 4.1% between April-November, 2016
8Bitumen consumption registered a rise of 23.4% while LPG was up 11.5% for the month
8Naphtha sales were up 6.9% whereas ATF growth was 8.2%.
8FO/LSHS sales were up 12.6% while Petcoke was up 35.7%.
8LDO consumption went up by a massive 50% in the month on account of boiler restarts by power plants and its extensive use by all types of industrial furnaces

Globally, with the backing of Big Oil, a lot of research is now devoted to push gas as a clean fuel.
8One such document sees the growing use of gas in the power sector as the "beginning of a quiet revolution".
8This hope is fueled by the fact that there is a gradual increase in gas-based PLF between January, 2015 to October, 2016, with generation targets beaten in most months.
8There is also a marginal increase in share of gas in total electricity generation.
8A complex set of matrices will have to however be in place for a sustainable policy framework for higher use of gas in the power sector
8Find out more by clicking on our Reports section on does this framework looks.
8It was found, for example, that the ‘switching cost’ (from coal to gas) for a medium sized power plant was estimated at around $3.50 /MMBtu with domestic coal, and $5.50/MMBtu with imported coal. At higher gas prices, the difference would have to be subsidised. The sustainability of gas in power therefore depends on two factors: 1) How long will global gas prices stay low for? 2) How long can the subsidy continue to gas generators continue?
8Competitive gas prices are needed to incentivise domestic gas exploration and production. Could revenues from government take (royalty & taxes) be ploughed back into supporting gas vis-à-vis coal in power generation?

Even though gas based electricity may have a fighting chance to stay relevant in the medium term, the ride so far has not been rosy
8Given India's gas production constraints, low cost-competitiveness of liquefied natural gas (LNG), and under-developed infrastructure, the share of gas-based power in total generation plunged to  around 4% in fiscal 2016 compared with 12% in 2011
8This is because of inadequate domestic supply and unviable LNG prices.
8Spot prices of electricity have fallen below Rs 3 per unit, while gas-based power costs Rs 4.7 per unit after subsidy.
8If the share of gas in India’s energy mix has to rise to say 10% by 2020, it would mean a doubling of gas consumption to over 100 billion cubic meter (BCM) from current levels. But given that domestic gas production is limited, demand for imported LNG would surge three-fold to 65 BCM, or over 50 million tonne.
8Collaterally, to import this LNG, India’s regasification capacity will have to increase to 60 MMTPA compared with 25 MMTPA now.
8This will involve big investments in the supply chain. The import infrastructure will entail a capex of  Rs 30,000-35,000 crore and an attendant requirement of 9,000 km of pipelines would cost another Rs 25,000-30,000 crore.
8For business development managers of equipment and service providers in these segments, busy days are up ahead.

Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) is one company whose short to medium term outlook is bright
8The fact that it operates in Delhi, one of the most polluted cities in the world, is a big advantage. Steps such as the banning of new registrations of all diesel vehicles above 2000cc help the company.
8City buses and taxis are now increasingly getting converted to CNG.
8The Delhi government has also helped IGL in getting faster clearances for new gas stations
8The penetration for CNG vehicles in the NCR region stands at around 28% and while PNG inroad is around 18%. This is expected to rise under a stricter regulatory regime.
8The economic advantage for using gas is higher for a consumer than petrol and this will further aid volumes as the user base matures.

There are golden times for City Gas Distribution companies
8Those with an existing infrastructure have the most to gain as they can source cheap domestic gas at up to 110% of their total requirement without a necessary cap on end product pricing
8What is more, a well entrenched distribution base and other barriers will make it extremely difficult for third parties who want to exploit the common carrier concept to enter the market amd set up base.
8Existing players therefore enjoy a massive competitive edge.
8These companies take deposits in advance for customers for laying pipeline infrastructure and due to customer stickiness this amount remains with the company and add to additional cash generation.
8But disruptive technology, such as the advent of the electric car and falling cost of battery storage, may still make the CGD business model redundant in the long run
