What is the status of the offshore and marine (O&M) sector going into 2018.
8"Neutral" seems to be the verdict of most observers.
Here are the positives and negatives:
Positives
8They are expecting return of non-drilling orders as a key catalyst for recovery - in particular floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels and FLNG terminals - bode well for the sector.
8Consolidation may be looming on the horizon for large-cap yard operators and small- to mid-cap offshore support vessel players
Negatives
8Margin erosions will continue to squeeze O&M operators that are laden with overcapacity.
8Competition for turnkey contracts linked to production facilities has been cut-throat.
8Upstream Companies contract awards not expected to return to pre-2014 levels even by 2020.
Bad news for rigs and vessels
8Charter rates for rigs and vessels - two sub-sectors dragged down by big supply gluts - could further decline in 2018.
8Low day rates for offshore support vessels (OSV) may be here for two to three more years.

The gas lobby in India is working furiously with the powers-that-be for wide reforms to push its agenda
Among the proposals are:
8Develop more LNG based urea plants so that imports come down to zero
8Operate gas based power plants at 40-45% PLF
8Target 90,000 MW DG based captive capacity to convert to LNG.
8Replace diesel and kerosene for lighting by gas or LNG
8Replace LPG by PNG in urban areas as natural gas has to compete with subsidized LPG
8Share of gas in transportation can go up if viability gap funding is provided for gas infrastructure.
8An nter-ministerial panel be set up on import substitution by LNG and gas
Comment: These proposals are not going to be all that easy to push through as they tread on too many toes. But some elements of these recommendations, including zero imports of urea, have already been set in motion. Click on Report for more. Details
The clean energy narrative continues to change contours every now and then.
8Till sometime ago, a diversification away from dirty fuels to clearer energy was stated to be an imperative for the oil & gas industry but on account of rising demand for fossil fuels, higher oil prices and the ascent of President Trump, the green drive has been put on the backburner.
8Eventually however, for oil & gas companies, given the compulsions of global warming and the determined effort towards decarbonization, there must always be a lookout for greener assets.
8In this context, the website had argued earlier that for large Indian oil & gas companies, exploring the possibility of setting up offshore wind projects seems like a good entry point for some of them. Some of our companies such as RIL and ONGC operate in and around potential sites for offshore wind power assets. The deployment challenges are also similar for oil & gas as well as offshore wind assets.
8The investment size is large and so is the green windfall.
8The website carries here a complete pre-feasibility report for the second offshore wind farm that is being planned to be set up in India.
8But the report claims that there are many uncertainties still in building such wind farms in India.
8Estimating the levelised cost of energy (LCOE) of an offshore wind farm as well as related economic metrics such as net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return (IRR) can be a challenge due to the range of technical and economic factors in play and their associated uncertainties.
8The conclusion however is that these are early days for offshore wind projects in India and most of the uncertainties are likely to sort out eventually.

How does natural gas or LNG compete with liquid fuels in terms of price competitiveness?
8A set of calculations seems to show that up to 23 MMTPA of liquid fuels can be replaced, including diesel and petrol
8The substitution can happen at a curve of 13% to the price of crude.
8The potential economic gain has estimated at a $3.7 billion
8Working backwards, what kind of price parity is possible to work out?
8For a better analysis liquid fuel prices are converted to $/mmbtu and it is seen that LNG is significantly cheaper to its liquid fuel equivalents such as LPG, diesel, FO and oil

Is there a  hint in the petroleum ministry's observations that while private sector fields such as Panna-Mukta and KG D-6 have shown a gradual erosion of production, public sector fields have stood up well to natural decline by employing well though out EOR and IOR programmes?
8The move to hive off  ONGC and OIL's declining fields to the private sector through some kind of a service contract or JV format had been doing the rounds
8But is the government having second thoughts?

The global LPG market has become increasingly complex
8Petrochemical demand is increasing and LPG is in competition with lighter feeds
8There was earlier increased LPG utilisation in steam cracking as there is a price advantage over naphtha
8But LPG prices firmed in the East to 97% of naphtha for propane and 100% of naphtha for butane. So despite steam cracking margins remaining high, the advantage for using LPG declined
8Sea borne trade is showing a distinct change of flows, with West to East volumes continuing to grow in what is a difficult arbitrage environment.
8US exports are gradually heading east displacing Middle Eastern volumes. US exports will account for 33% of total seaborne supply by 2020 and over 38% by 2025
8China is leading the way for LPG but demand is slowing down.
8The focus continues to be in India but for retail demand

8They estimate that spare capacity in the power generation sector could absorb nearly 0.5 million b/d of HSFO demand, predominantly to destinations in the Middle East and Africa which would support longer voyages.
8Furthermore, by considering HSFO and VLSFO as dirty products, the total market share lost to MGO is just under 1 million b/d, which is likely to be reduced to 0.5 million b/d when new sources of demand, (i.e. power generation) are considered.
8Over time refinery upgrades will gradually come online, suggesting more VLSFO will be produced at the expense of HSFO.
8Assuming compatibility issues are overcome by this stage, higher availability of VLSFO should support a demand shift from MGO to VLSFO. In time this would see the volume of dirty bunker fuel cargoes being
transported on tankers move close to pre-2020 levels.
8Further, if refiners are to invest in upgrading capacity, and if sufficient volumes of VLSFO will eventually be produced, what are the longer-term benefits of the scrubbers?
8Will the spread between VLSFO and HSFO be enough to make the investment viable in the longer term?
8Undoubtedly, the short repayment horizon would appear to make scrubbers effective for those who install them ready for 2020. But, as time progresses post-2020, the spread between MGO and HSFO is likely to narrow, whilst refinery upgrades could see HSFO supply tighten. Click on Report for more. Details
This week the IEA released its influential ‘Oil 2018’ report, which analyses oil market developments to 2023. This is the first edition of the report to be released since the IMO committed to the 1st of January 2020 implementation date for full introduction of very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) for the shipping industry. The IEA has thus been forced to offer their view of how the market will evolve.
8Come 2020, the agency expects a near 1 million b/d swing from high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) to marine gasoil (MGO). Interestingly, the IEA has assumed a large uptake in a new 0.5% fuel oil blend,
named VLSFO, which they estimate will take nearly another 1 million b/d of demand away from HSFO.
8The result is of course, a near 2 million b/d decline in HSFO demand.
8For tankers in the fuel oil trade this may of course seem alarming to see such large volumes of fuel oil demand stripped from the market.
8Yet, VLSFO will be carried on dirty tankers, reducing the demand shift to clean from dirty products to 1 million b/d.
8Furthermore, the IEA estimate that from 2020 to 2023, VLSFO will claw back market share from MGO, with eventual VLSFO demand of approximately 2 million b/d, complimented by 1 million b/d of ‘scrubbed’ (or non-compliant?) HSFO demand.
8In effect, this returns the clean/dirty bunker demand split to where it was prior to 2020, but with VLSFO having taken share from HSFO.

Find out more about how the big battle between hydrogen and electric cars are being fought between Elon Musk (Tesla) on one hand and Takahiro Hachigo of Honda and Akio Toyoda of Toyota on the other.
8The big advantage for hydrogen cars is that can be refuelled within 5 minutes. At best, the electric cars require 9 times longer charging time from an almost empty to a full battery. A Tesla Supercharger gives about 10 km per minute.
8The surprising but unnoticed fact is that hydrogen cars already have longer range, faster refuelling (5 minutes) and lower price than the most high performance electric vehicles.
8Next year's hydrogen-powered cars are announced to get a longer range and lower price than today's
8Hydrogen refueling needs huge investments but technological advancements are making this easier than before. Mass production of electrolytic hydrogen packs in container modules is likely to bring down the cost of setting up dispensing station significantly.
8A 800 km hydrogen powered train is already working in Europe. These trains can change the entire electric auto dynamics in the rail industry. It is possible that eventually, if these trains gain momentum, India's great rail electrification infrastrucutre -- more of which is being built now -- will become redundant.
8The low weight associated with a relatively high tolerance for the hydrogen tank volume, reduced noise and reduced contaminants in water and air should make hydrogen and fuel cell-powered boats an interesting option.
8Hydrogen fuel cells provide approximately 3 times more energy/kg than batteries and it is more realistic to operate an aircraft with hydrogen and fuel cells than with battery. Hypersonic jet planes can be powered by hydrogen.
8Other kinds of interesting options are coming up. For wind power, diurnal variation is buffered with batteries, a couple of days variation with pumped hydropower and several weeks with electrolytic hydrogen. Pilot projects are being launch with furious rapidity around the world to store spare electricity in hydrogen and to convert electricity into chemicals and petrochemicals.

Technology is moving really rapidly and it is always a challenge for companies today to figure out where the future is going to be.
8The website carries here a scan of nearly 350 cutting edge research documents (they are included in this report) that predicts that hydrogen technology is slowly by inexorably gaining an advantage over battery technology in the entire mobility segment, from two wheelers, cars, trucks & buses, trains, drones and aircrafts.
8Hydrogen powered systems are emerging in other segments too, including as long lasting laptop and phone chargers.
8Small hydrogen canisters can provide a 100 km rides for two wheelers.
8The market is evolving very quickly and it seems that lower range cars will be dominated by battery technology whereas long range trucks and vehicles will be powered by hydrogen.
8Cost of hydrogen manufacturing and storage is coming down, particularly when tied up with off-peak renewable energy rates.
8Hydrogen is now becoming cost competitive as more and more companies across the world begin investing in this technology
8Indian companies with an eye on the future need to keep a close track on these developments.
The future is here and it is uncertain.

How will oil and gas companies attract and retain the next generation of talent? This seems to be a big question that no one is really addressing.
8The oil and and gas industry was in jeopardy of falling behind in the competition to attract talented younger employees.
8The concern is that the skills required for this new age of digital oil and gas differ immeasurably from what has long been the traditional skillset, and largely reside with a younger generation. Failing to elevate the skills of a workforce is the most common pitfall in unsuccessful transformations.
8To advance the skills needed in the oil and gas sector will require a combination of recruiting fresh talent from outside the industry – including data scientists, software engineers and other digitally savvy professionals – as well as recent graduates, plus updating skills for operational staff already within the industry. Disciplines include digital risk security, cloud architecture and infrastructure, control networks (SCADA), robotics and Progressive Web applications, among others.
8Petroplan, one of the world’s leading oil, gas and energy recruitment companies, produced their second Talent Insight Index in 2017. A key finding was that digital natives may not be looking at the oil and gas sector as a career choice, verifying earlier indicators within the industry.
8Find out more on what an oil & gas company needs to do to attract really good talent and how some companies have gone through this transition faster than others.

Many buyers take a decision on buying a compressor on the basis of its purchase price
8But the biggest cost to a user is the operating cost over a period of, say, 10 years. Operating costs come down to two things – energy consumption and service and maintenance cost.
8Service and maintenance is now conducted periodically, like servicing a car, on a preventive analysis basis. |
8The trend is now slowly shifting towards predictive maintenance in the future
8Another trend is the move towards oil-free compressors. As clients are becoming more environmentally aware, there is a push to remove oil from compressors, as it is a contaminant.
8As oil-free air compressing systems utilise a teflon sleeve or coating in the compression chamber, they do not require any lubrication. They are maintenance free as far as lubrication is
concerned. However, one will still need to service the air filter on a regular basis.
8But there is a flip side too to oil free compressors

Australia is starting up another $24 billion of LNG of projects. Commissioning dates are spread throughout 2018 and 2019
8The avalanche of fresh LNG will mean that promoters will have to target India as well and not just China, Korea and Japan.
8Australia has a geographical advantage over the US in terms of distance to India. The expansion of the Panama Canal, completed in late-June 2016, means that most LNG tankers can now pass through, providing a shorter trade route for LNG exports from the USA to Asian customers. However, shipping to Asian customers from the US Gulf Coast still takes more than
