Nowhere the dynamics of gas, coal and liquid fuels more at play than at the ceramic manufacturing centre of Morbi in Gujarat. 8Ceramic is an energy intensive industry and gas consumption volumes have halved on accouint of poor economics, coal gasification was found to cheaper than gas. 8But the primary gas supplier here has been trying to entire customers back through a differential pricing model. 8The gas premium has come down as a result and more gas consumption is expected 8The enterprising ceramic industry in Morbi has the choice of using coal, gas and liquid fuels 8The recent hike in crude prices has made gas cheaper than fuel oil 8Hemmed into this dynamics is Prime Minister Modi's demonetization and GST drives, both of which are transforming India's industrial landscape, and that of Morbi in particular, more than anything else in the past. 8A similar story plays out in most industrial centres around the country, where furnace owners switch from one fuel to the other depending upon cost economics. Pushing fossil fuels out of our daily milieu and replacing it with renewable energy is a subject of much analysis today. 8But newer studies show that there are many hidden costs to the switch to a greener economy which are not taken into account at present but will eventually impact the transition. 8Research is beginning to acknowledge that the existing energy matrix has a lot of sunk cost value inherent in it but not taken into the calculations yet 8For example, the world currently has existing coal fired power plants, coal mines and general coal infrastructure, all of which has a sunk value that benefits society. The same goes for oil and gas infrastructure. The result is that giving up such infrastructure will mean losing the social benefits of that sunk value. 8If we outlaw the use of coal then all that sunk value of existing technologies and capital can no longer be used to help society, from creating jobs to increasing government programs for the poor to helping finance health care. Even if we put an emissions fee on the use of fossil fuels to reduce carbon emissions it would not necessarily overwhelm the inherent value of the continuing use of them. Click on Reports for more

A very interesting insight talks of different perspective on global warming when looked at from the prism of developed and developing countries 8The social discount rates on global warming are far higher in a developing country than in the developed world. 8The argument is that the social rate of discount, which must be used to determine the present value of the future costs of carbon, can be as high as 30% in developing countries where two thirds of humanity live 8Using this as a yardstick, from the developing world's perspective, any adverse cost that happens 30 years from now is almost of no value today. 8For example if we have a $100 trillion future cost of global climate change in 30 years, that is a negligible $38 billion present value cost today 8This analysis brings a new dynamics to the business of climate change and its impact on the world and its people. A comprehensive analysis claims that India's energy security is precariously and dangerously balanced as of today 8High import dependence makes it extremely vulnerable. 8In pursuit of energy security in the future, India will need to embark on a massive and strategic construction of energy reserve facilities to guard against supply disruption risks and energy market instability. 8Also, utmost priority should be given to the development of renewable and unconventional technologies as guard against future energy insecurity 8While these are facts which are already known, the study provides a theoretical and mathematical framework not available before Click on Reports for more

That India is a price sensitive gas market is not in doubt. The figures spell it out 8The cost of imported LNG to India sprung up to $10.74/mmbtu in February, 2019 8This is up from $9.30/mmbtu for the same month last year 8February 2018 imports are down to 2110 mmsc in relation to 2132 mmscm for the same month last year. 8The February price was clearly higher than the average of $8.17/mmbtu recorded for April-February, 2017-18 8Then again, for the same 11-month period in 2016-17, the price was just $6.91/mmbtu Click on Details and Reports for more

While gas demand slowed down in February, dirty fuel consumption went up 8Petcoke consumption was up 2.2 MMTP in February 2019 as against 1.7 MMT for the same period last month 8Interestingly, naphtha consumption was down as well on higher pries at 1 MMT in February 2018 in relation to 1.1 MMT for the same month last year 8FO/LSHS consumption stayed at the same level at 0.5 MMTP for the month 8For the 11-month period, ending February 2018, petcoke consumption went up to 24.1 MMT in relation to 21.8 MMT for the same period last year 8Cumulative naphtha consumption for the period was however down 11.3 MMT this year as against 12.1 MMT last year 8FO/LSHS consumption too declined 6.20 MMT as against 6.6 MMT in April-February, 2016-17 8The point to note is that gas consumption for February was down to 4.5 BCM as against 4.6 BCM. For April-February 2017-18, it was 52.9 BCM in relation to 50.7 BCM for the same period last year. 8So what does the data show? That the rise in gas consumption is very slow indeed. The fact that high prices are stymieing demand is clearly evident in the February consumption figures. 8Even though consumption is up in April-February 2017-18, it is not going up fast enough. 8On the other hand, what is seen in liquid fuels is that higher prices of FO/LSHS and naphtha are causing their consumption to be replaced by relatively cheaper petcoke which is produced in abundance by Indian refineries. 8Unless strict action is taken to ban petcoke, its consumption will rise at the expense of other competing fuels. 8At the end of the day, increase in gas consumption may not take place even after such as ban as gas will will then have to reckon with FO and naphtha demand. The key to gas fulfilling its potential role as a ‘transition fuel’ up to and beyond 2030, is that it must be delivered to high-income markets below $8/MMbtu, and to low-income markets below $6/MMbtu (and ideally closer to $5/MMbtu). 8The major challenge to the future of gas will be to ensure that it does not become (and in many low-income countries remain) unaffordable or uncompetitive, long before its emissions make it unburnable. 8Research has shown that in a country such as India, there is an absolute price level, such as $5-6/mmbtu, above which customers can not afford to purchase the fuel either because of their income level, or because the end-user price level of the final product for which gas is being purchased would be too high. 8That fact that pipeline capacity utilization in India is low is a pointer to the inability of gas suppliers to find affording customers. 8KG Basin suppliers will have to keep these gas ceiling prices in mind while formulating their arithmetic. 8Another fact that points to the lack of affordability is the slowing down of demand when the price of gas has crossed the $10/mmbtu mark Click on Reportsfor a through analytical analysis of this affordability proposition.Details

Importantly, fresh analysis seems to show that the revenue sharing system is also a victim of heavy gaming 8The disincentive to achieve a level of production that results in foregoing the majority of revenues to the government could impact not just upon government revenues, but also on production levels. 8Was it then a wrong decision to move to revenue sharing? 8Opinion was any way divided before the revenue sharing model was implemented Click on Reports for more

What is the possibility of achieving Narendra Modi's target of achieving a policy objective of reducing energy imports by 10 per cent over current levels by 2022? 8India’s likely future growth in oil demand to 2022 (forecast at just over 240 Mt) implies that implementation of the 10 per cent reduction could equate to a higher requirement of 20.2 Mt (over 400 kb/d) of incremental production by 2022 (around 50 per cent higher than current levels). 8This does not seem likely at the current rate of progress. 8The two Discovered Field Rounds -- the second is in the offing -- are unlikely to do the job 8Putting nomination blocks -- which contain some of India's most prized hydrocarbon reserves -- to auction is seen as an attempt to reach the 10% reduction in import dependence target 8But will this bring about the desired result? Also find out more on what the petroleum ministry is thinking of doing with the farming out of nomination blocks 8Two models are being considered. 8Know more how many fields have been shortlisted under the two models 8Is the government making the same mistakes it seems have made in the NELP and revenue sharing models this around too? 8Modeling is much more complicated for producing blocks than for new acreages and the chances of going wrong are much higher. 8Will the bidding criteria be left too broad -- allowing all and sundry to enter the field -- so that it can be gamed again? 8The answer can well be a "yes" unless steps are taken to plug the loopholes. A detailed freshly published report has illustrated clear instances of how bidders have "gamed" India's NELP programmes. 8The entire scheme was badly planned and therefore lead to sub-optimal production. 8What happened was that the first-price sealed bid auction processes were susceptible to the ‘winner’s curse’ – a situation where the winner of the auction discovers that it may have overpaid for a lease when the second-highest bid is revealed to be relatively low. 8The problem of this overbidding can also be indicative of ‘speculative bidding’ – bids made with the main intention of increasing the value of a portfolio, particularly during times of high international oil prices. 8The risk to a government with overbidding was that the winner sought a post facto renegotiation of terms. 8The liquidated damages that were introduced later were highly inadequate to control the menace because the damages sought were pegged very low, at a fraction of the total cost of drilling a well. 8It looks like some of the charges made by the CAG that revenues were lost due to poor ex facto enforcement of NELP rules are likely to stick. Traditionally, one of the key drivers for demolition has been weak spot earnings. 82017 witnessed higher tanker scrapping on the back of deteriorating trading conditions. 8Further increases have been seen more recently in 2018, most notably in the VLCC segment. 8For the year to date, 15 VLCCs have been reported sold for demolition, with this year’s volume already exceeding the total for 2017. 8Firmer scrap values have also helped to stimulate demolition: lightweight prices in the sub-continent have climbed above $450/ldt in recent months, their highest level in three years. 8The prospects for the spot market remain poor in the short term, suggesting that we are likely to see more tonnage heading for demolition. 8The irony is that even if more VLCCs are scrapped, it is unlikely to be sufficient to offset 46 VLCCs still scheduled for delivery this year, even if we take slippage into account. It is not just the weak spot market that will keep the demolition market strong over the next few years 8There are other compelling factors as well 8The market for older tankers look increasingly gloomy for now 8Unless there is a sustained and exception surge in demand Click on Reports to know more

Presently many Indian refineries are fairly highly instrumented and are process controlled in real time on a millisecond basis. Distributed Control Systems & Programmable Logic Controllers (DCS & PLCs) have advanced in a significant way to cope with the ever-challenging operational requirements. 8However, there are certain assets and processes in a refinery that are still not being monitored or analyzed on a real-time basis. 8These are currently thought not to be critical to refinery process control or safety or operational bottlenecks and hence not mandatorily monitored through DCS/PLCs. Also, it has not been economically viable to route them through the DCS/ PLC process. 8They are primarily monitored periodically and mostly through manual interventions and therefore analysis of performance history or failure prediction is not possible. 8A few examples of these type of assets and processes are steam traps, pressure relief valves, corrosion monitoring, catalyst life, liquid carryover in compressors, dosing chemicals, primary supply & distribution, among others. 8There are now more cost-effective ways of monitoring them on a real-time basis And they can contribute significantly to improving the productivity, efficiency, asset life, process safety and hence the GRM. Let us consider the common Pressure Relief Valve (PRV). The PRV is supposed to discharge excess gas from containers and pipes beyond a set pressure. Over a period, springs in the PRVs suffer from fatigue and their set-points change and the PRVs start leaking gas into the environment at a lesser pressure. 8This leads to loss of product while also being an environmental and safety hazard. PRVs are un-instrumented and also mounted in inaccessible places making manual inspection challenging. Therefore, they are left to be tested only during turnarounds or shutdowns. 8However, new regulations may make it mandatory to monitor PRVs electronically. 8The solution is to add an IIoT differential pressure sensor across the PRV that will monitor its health in real time. This will transmit the real-time information directly to an IIoT platform, without having to be connected to the DCS or PLC. 8Any malfunctioning PRVs will be detected immediately in real time and can be actioned upon without having to wait for months for the next shutdown. 8Imagine this happening with thousands of PRVs in a refinery. 8Studies have shown that real-time monitoring of all PRVs in a refinery can potentially lead to additional 20% savings in operating costs.
