The Rupee is projected to strengthen rapidly in the next 12 months, according to fresh analysis
8The expectation is that USDINR will trade at 64.0 in 3M amidst the China/India border dispute.
8It is then expected to trend to 62.5 in 9M and 62.0 in 12M.
The next leg of sustained INR appreciation will be dependent on deeper economic reforms that have been slow to materialize.

An interesting government sponsored experiment is on way in 12 MSME clusters -- ranging from brass to ceramics and handtools -- in using new energy efficiency methodologies and renewable energy
8The idea seems to be to then scale up the model to the national level
8It will also help provide inputs into policy making
8Does a model like this have implications for the gas sector in India?

There is some consternation globally among gas producers at the 11.8% fall in gas demand in the US power sector in June 2017 in relation to the same month last year.
8It is acknowledged that renewable energy is making a dent, but the extent of it is not known yet because as of now it is a surfeit of hydropower output that is leading to the fall in gas consumption in the power sector.
8An analysis over the last four years shows that gas consumption in power sector is trending on the lower edge this year.
8The use of gas in power consumption and its trend is going to be of increasing interest to analysts in the months and years ahead

The estimated landed price in India in June for LNG is pegged at $ 5.50/mmbtu
8This price has been arrived at based on a netback calculation
8With net global LNG oversupply now projected to last until 2025 or even beyond, the likely breakeven gas price that India's nearly $ 23 billion in upstream investment that is now potentially lined up in Eastern Offshore will have to look for is $5.50 or even lower.
8This is going to be a tightrope walk for gas producers, given that the discoveries are in deep waters, rough weather and treacherous geology.

India paid the highest global price for LNG in the world in June 2017
8According to latest global data, the highest prices in June were prevalent in June were in Asia
8But compared to China, Japan and South Korea, India paid a higher average landed price of LNG
8That India's prices were the highest needs further investigation, given that we are nearer to Qatar, the largest supplier of LNG in the world, than either China, Japan or South Korea
8Is there scope for a lowering of prices?

A beta version of our project monitoring software is now online. It took us a long time to develop and perfect this unique software. Access for this now is free for our current subscribers.
8One of the key ingredients of the software is its ability to generate a future RFQ date for equipment & services and validated key contacts along with scores of attendant data fields.
8A trained group of mechanical engineers has been filling up thousands of bits of relevant information and market intelligence into the software for the past several months. We have a "bottom up" approach, with each field audited by our engineers from information gathered from the ground.
8For every project, there is an intricate web of data fields, spread over dozens of  industrial units and facilities of a given company. Each of these units and facilities will have many data points.
8Intricate search filters will give you exactly what you are looking for.
8Google maps are sprinkled across our databases for easy spatial referencing. NIC industrial and product codes are also included for quick identification.
8As the database fills up over the next few months, it will provide the richest tapestry of industrial information ever available in India. For the moment we will limit our coverage to power, oil & gas, petrochemicals and fertilizers in India but we will spread our wings to other sectors in the coming months. Eventually, we will extend our footprint globally because we believe we have a winning software and a huge cost advantage in relation to similar global databases.
8Our approach will be to give you a future business opportunity with rich accompanying data.
8The software has an easy-to-use format, but users are advised to tap our "Ask Us" button for help from one of our engineers to understand the myriad functionalities of our software, including the CRM section.
8The extensiveness of our database can be gauged from the following facts:
8In BPCL, we have built a database of  25 existing industrial facilities which include refineries, LPG bottling plants, petrochemical complexes, pipelines, pumping stations, among others. We have documented many as 53 industrial units within these facilities. Each of them has key contact fields, technology and input out matrices, utility fields, energy consumption data, long term maintenance contract information and a lot more. In each of these facilities and industrial entities, we will be looking for business development opportunities, either by way of brownfield expansions, additions, revamping or maintenance projects. Over and above that we keep track of scores of greenfield business development opportunities. As we go along, the database will get larger and richer.
8In HPCL, we have so far documented 28 facilities and 41 units.
8ONGC has a massive industrial base, and we have tapped as many as 40 facilities so far along with key contacts in each of them. However given the intricate nature of ONGC's E&P assets, filling up the database comprehensively will take some more time. Our focus will be to look at oil and gas production, starting from gathering stations to processing complexes.

What are the returns going to be like for big majors when they divert their resources to renewables?
8The returns range from 7% to 10%.
8A model (details are carried here) shows a return of 7% for offshore wind, 9% for onshore wind and 10% for solar PV under base-case assumptions
8This is around half the 18% the oil & gas majors could make on their next generation of upstream growth projects; a weighted average of the 22% from future drilling onshore North America and 14% on conventional pre-FID projects (both modelled at US$65/bbl).
8Returns will be lower however if oil prices stay low. Moreover the higher IRR takes into account returns from M&A, which provide a much higher kickback.
8Within this pool of upstream investments, there are also much low return investments.
8These lower return projects are typically risky, being sensitive to movements in commodity prices.
8The all-in returns for wind and solar stack up against this lower returning subset.
8The point is eventually the prospective returns from renewables are not materially lower than the upstream average on a full cost basis.

RIL's chairman Mukesh Ambani said last week that his company will invest in new sources of energy, aiming for leading positions in renewables.
Ambani clearly has his sights right.
8A niche energy market now, renewables will be much bigger by the middle of the next decade, as oil and gas demand growth slows.
8A simple comparison of sector revenues shows that the global renewables market will narrow the gap with oil and gas -- the latter is 33 times bigger in 2015, but just 13 times the scale in 2035.
8Projections show overall revenues from renewables in 2035 will be nearly three times greater than those from US unconventionals -- the industry’s number one growth segment -- in a carbon constrained case.
8That said, renewables costs will trend down sharply over the period, and capital will be increasingly diverted from upstream E&P projects by global oil & gas majors, and now RIL, to build material positions in wind and solar.

For a company like RIL, scale will be of paramount importance while going into renewables.
8Most renewables projects are much smaller than typical oil and gas projects. Renewables project investment ranges from US$660 million for a base-case solar project (details of which are carried here) to US$2.3 billion for offshore wind.
8This ranks alongside small to medium-sized pre-FID upstream developments in the portfolio of oil majors, even assuming a 100% working interest basis.
8Offshore wind is the best current route to scale up for now. And India provides a big opportunity in this segment.
8Its potentially ranks alongside some of  Big Oil's s largest next generation upstream developments.
8A 2.4 GW initial wind energy development would require US$7 billion of investment, generating an IRR of 11% and stable cash flow of US$0.9 billion a year.  RIL and BP can join hands for such a project.
8Recent offshore projects awarded in Germany have been bid into auction at zero subsidy. This implies that operators expect another step-change in cost reduction post 2020, allowing next-generation projects to achieve similar returns and cash flow profiles for much lower prices.

It is important to understand that the Deendayal field -- made up of the KG-8,15 & 17 discoveries -- is not the only one capable of delivering gas in the KG-OSN-2001/3 block
8There are six other discoveries --  KG-16, KG-22, KG-31, KG-21, KG-19 and KG-20SS -- in the block.
8GSPC had submitted Operating Committee (OC) approved DoCs for all six discoveries for review by the DGH.
8Last heard, the upstream regulator had asked GSPC to prepare a robust dynamic model keeping in mind the retrograde nature of the gas reservoir before the Field Development Plan (FDP) for these discoveries is submitted.
8GSPC was also advised to carry out simulation studies before the submission of the FDP. ONGC is now expected to carry on the task
8Even by DGH's own estimates, the GIIP of the new set of discoveries is an impressive 8 TCF of gas
8Bad permeability and other geological complications make extraction of the gas a difficult affair and the actual gas produced is likely to be much lower.
8Nevertheless the point to note is that there is scope for more gas output, beyond the 5 mmscmd from the Deendayal field, in the block.
8ONGC is already thinking of tying in the KG-DWN-98/2 infrastructure with the Deendayal field.
8But even with fresh attempts to get the field to production, it remains a moot point when the discoveries in this block will begin earning a reasonable return on investment Details
The eventual total investment getting the Deendayal field to full production has been pegged at around $ 4 billion. And yet the end result will be a gas production of a mere 5 mmscmd, as of now
8At the gas price now prevalent for High Pressure High Temperature fields, this investment is unlikely to be recouped.
8As of now, the equipment deployed in the field is proving to be insufficient to handle bottomhole fluid temperatures, which are as high as 460 degree Fahrenheit.
8What makes it more difficult is that the field contains many faults and there is a need to deploy multiple horizontal wells to sustain production.
8Then again, permeability and porosity are low, and due to this reason, the recovery factor is difficult to pull up even after hydro fracturing techniques are utilized
8The sulphur in the natural gas is more than the normal level, so production and processing facilities will have to withstand high sulphur content in natural gas
8It will take ONGC a long time to ramp up production to the 5 mmscmd level.
8The FDP will have to be reworked as GSPC's projection shows a slow ramp up, from 0.8 mmscmd, going up to 1.6 mmscmd, then on to 3.5 msmcmd and finally to 5 mmscmd in the third year.
8Production was meant to have started in December, 2013 but began much later in 2015. All deadlines are currently running well behind schedule.
8There is no doubt that way too much money was sunk in for way too little production. Details
Hari Bhartia's Jubilant Offshore Drilling Private Ltd has formally put its 10% stake in the Block KG-OSN-2001/3 on the block.
8The company has gone broke, and is now undergoing what is called an Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process under the new Bankruptcy Code.
8It is pertinent to note that ONGC has taken over 80% of the block from GSPC, at a cost of $ 995 million.
8Attempts were made privately earlier to sell off this stake but there were not takers.
8It remains a moot point whether buyers will indeed be found for this stake.
8There is no doubt that ONGC will invest in the block's Deendayal field and integrate it with its other KG Basin offshore developments. Anyone who buys the 10% stake will have to end up investing more money, besides taking all the debt incurred by Jubilant.
8Given the high cost of additional exploration and production from this high pressure high temperature block, with unstable geology, over and above the sunk cost, the breakeven gas price is likely to be significantly higher than the actual price of gas that the Deendayal field is likely to elicit for a long time to come.
8ONGC is not going to be an easy partner to deal with, particularly when the E&P major is in the driver's seat.
8Cash calls for further work will be heavy and a return on investment, if at all, will be a long time into the future. Click on Report for more. Details
What is behind the opposition of Southern states to the laying of gas pipelines India?
8The analysis claims that “outsiders” initiate a fear psychosis, spread it with the help of social media, draw the attention of mainstream media, rope in few participants from extreme leftists, religious fringe groups and separatists, under the disguise of protection of land, agriculture and environment, and successfully foist those “perceived catastrophes” into the minds of vulnerable local people, by exploiting their ignorance
8This seems like a simplistic argument but the analysis eventually blames companies such as GAIL for a ham-handed approach to the problem

There have been recent reports that cheap Japanese reloaded cargoes will flood the global LNG markets and keep prices low for a long time to come.
8This is meant to happen because Japanese demand for LNG will go down over the years
8But an analysis shows that this is easier said than done and Europeans will be better at the game than the Japanese will ever be

There have always been allegations that GAIL uses its monopoly powers to exploit its customers.
8The source of this power emanates from the fact that it is both a monopoly pipeline owner as well as a marketer of gas.
8The allegations, however, have never been entirely proved but a comprehensive investigation by the Competition Commission will soon nail the truth once and for all.
8GAIL's claim has always been that back to back obligations force an onward imposition of Take or Pay (ToP) conditionalities on customers and its conduct has never been one where it abuses its monopoly supplier status.
The Commission is now going to dig up all the relevant information needed to either prove or disprove GAIL's claim, by looking into:
8The different sources of gas procurement by GAIL and the nature of arrangements with each supplier including price and ToP liability under each such arrangement
8Whether the gas supplied to the customers is supplied from a commingled stream, in which case, what is the basis for price determination/ revision from time to time
8Whether ToP liabilities are always imposed on GAIL by its upstream suppliers which are then passed on to customers
8Whether GAIL suffers losses, as it claims it does, on account of non off-take or under-drawl of gas by its contracted customers
8What were the total ToP liabilities levied by the GAIL on all its customers located across India in recent years
8Whether GAIL has indeed adopted any discriminatory practice in the imposition of ToP liability across its customer base
8Whether GAIL imposed full ToP liability only in cases where the concerned buyer contested the legality of the ToP claim or resorted to litigation or arbitration proceedings
8Details of policy, if any, of GAIL regarding the imposition of different liability upon different classes of customers.

8Deep decarbonization of transport and mobility may not be achieved at any acceptable level of carbon tax, a new argument seems to say. Consider a thought experiment in which the target is to reduce consumption of carbon emitting fuels to half of today’s levels. To achieve that, one would need to charge a much higher price for oil products to the consumer- perhaps higher than the equivalent of $200/bbl of crude oil. This level is based on the observation that prices of $150/bbl did not do much to reduce oil consumption in the last decade. Lower demand would put downward pressure on oil prices. But, to reduce production significantly, oil prices may need to fall below $20/bbl. After all, prices at $30/bbl did little to choke off production.Click on Report for more.

Why did MRPL post a GRM of $4.75 for the quarter ended June 2017 when RIL posted a GRM of $ 11.9/bbl?
8MRPL claims that its operating GRM was higher for the quarter at $ 7.07 against $ 5.29 in the for the same quarter in the previous year but inventory loss got the figure down to $ 4.75 as against an inventory gain taking the GRM up to $ 10.01 in the previous year
8If there as an inventory loss that accounted for the lower MRPL GRM, didn't RIL go through a similar crunch?
8Clearly, more answers are needed
8There are a large number of peer to peer benchmarking studies available today and they should be relied upon to suggest process improvements in MRPL.

The diesel generation market -- and the attendant market for fossil fuels -- can be under very serious threat within the foreseeable future from distributed renewable energy with storage capacities.
8Such renewable capacities are now technically and economically viable.
8Interestingly, a great variety of electricity storage technologies can be applied to provide different functions at different locations.
8The point to note is that no single electricity storage technology scores well in all dimensions, and the technology of choice depends largely on system size, specific service required, electricity sources and the marginal cost of peak electricity.
8But the remote area electricity supply and the standby power generation paradigm is likely to be resolved sooner than later through renewable technology solutions.
Click on Reports for a detailed analysis.

Even as renewable energy emerges as a looming threat, the going is going to be good for the diesel generation set manufacturers for now.
8The diesel gen set growth will be at10% CAGR over FY17-20 after a subdued FY13-17, when industry volumes declined at a compounded annual rate of 5% (primarily due to a sharp fall in sales for telecom towers)
8The demand will be driven by higher volumes in the mid/high horse power (HP) segment; demand for low HP products is likely to remain subdued.
8Key end markets that are seeing a revival are Infrastructure (Roads, Metro Rail, Railways), Commercial (IT/ITES, Data Centers, Hotels, Hospitals, Educational Institutions), and Manufacturing (Pharmaceuticals, Automotive).
8Interestingly, less than 15% of the demand for DG sets is for prime power and 85-90% of the DG market is for backup power -- this implies that despite low power deficits, the need for DG sets would continue on account of insecurity of grid supply.
8Find out more on where various gen set manufacturers are placed in taking advantage of the booming markets ahead.
