An entirely new regulatory mechanism has been suggested for the world to go completely electric..
8Energy-intensive industries involved in international trade may not be able to afford process modifications to reduce CO2 emissions. A global agreement to create equality among industries (globally coordinated carbon pricing, for example) would in principle solve this issue, but is highly unlikely for political reasons.
8Another option would be for governments to restrict international trading of materials based on the upstream emissions associated with them, and to introduce border tax adjustment mechanisms. There is no evidence that the World Trade Organisation (WTO) or the various rules of a large number of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements would stand in their way.
8Governments could agree to devise common methods for calculating how much carbon is used in making products, based on ongoing work of the International Organization for Standardization.
8Jurisdictions could then decide to adopt a set of standards for the embedded carbon of the materials they use (e.g. in the context of a regional trade agreement), in line with their  efforts towards achieving a zero-carbon economy.

Fossil fuels will remain competitive until a point where a tax on carbon is initiated.
8Overall, a combination of direct process electrification and use of storable hydrogen-rich chemicals and fuels manufactured from electricity may offer the greatest potential for renewables uptake by various industries.
8Electricity is costlier to store than heat, but is much easier to transport if connected to the grid.
8Hydrogen-rich chemicals are easier to store and transport than both heat and power, and this advantage may compensate for the energy lost in successive conversions of renewable power, provided all vectors are used to their best advantage.
8With current technology costs, however, using hydrogen or chemicals as fuels would entail additional costs
8The fact that manufacturing hydrogen from renewable electricity is becoming competitive with producing it from fossil fuels does not imply that this hydrogen can compete with fossil fuels for producing heat, power or traction – at least not yet.
8While hydrogen-rich chemicals could ultimately enable nearly complete electrification of the global economy, they will likely require government support -- unless of course carbon prices are sufficient to discourage the use of fossil fuels.
Click on Reports for more Details
There can be other uses that renewable energy can put to
8Renewables-based hydrogen and hydrogen-rich chemicals could increase the energy content of other green fuels such as biofuels, and could substitute for fossil fuels as a source of heat in various situations in industry, notably in the chemical and cement industries.
8Some of these hydrogen-rich chemicals would be carbon-free (e.g. ammonia), others would contain carbon but would serve as carriers and no carbon would be combusted.
8Still others would be drop-in fuels and their carbon burnt, but it could be of atmospheric origin.
Click on Reports for more   Details
Renewables-based hydrogen could be used to reduce iron ore into pig iron that would then be melted in electric arc furnaces with some scrap iron, drastically reducing CO2 emissions in steelmaking. The Swedish steelmaking industry is currently developing this option.
8Emissions associated with cement manufacturing (2.2 GtCO2/y) could be reduced by using solar or electric heat, or by combusting hydrogen-rich synthetic fuels. The full or near-full elimination of emissions – including process CO2 emissions – is conceivable based on molten carbonate electrolysis of dense CO2 fluxes, or direct electrolysis of solubilised limestone.
8The possible valorisation of carbon co-products such as methanol or carbon nanotubes could make emissions-free cement-making more profitable than traditional manufacturing,
although these options are still only at laboratory scale.

New and significant research continues to point towards dramatic changes that can push the beleaguered oil & gas industry move into an abyss.
8It is now clearly established that a combination of hydro, wind and solar power will eventually be able to deliver power at less than Rs 2/kwh in selected parts of the world, including India.
8What is more important is that such low electricity prices could allow hydrogen to be produced at costs competitive with natural gas reforming, oil-cracking or coal gasification – without CO2 emissions.
8The low hanging fruit seems to be ammonia, which is used mostly to manufacture nitrogen fertilisers. When ammonia is produced from green electricity, the process requires only air and water.
8Beyond current ammonia production for various industrial uses, green hydrogen could serve many other purposes to help decarbonise industry. For instance, it could serve as a precursor to manufacture methanol and other chemicals.
8It is quite possible then for an entire new chain of chemicals to be produced through the "electric" rather than the hydrocabon route.
Package it as Ram Rajya?
Comment:
India more than any other country needs to look at these exciting new possibilities with great amount of excitement. Going electric can transform Indian into a global superpower, exceeding the United States, if not China in the 21st century. Indian's oil dependency is likely to go up to 97% by 2040 under the business as usual scenario. If the renewable energy route to an all-electric future is pursued, as emerging technologies mature, the benefits will be unimaginable. All governmental efforts must be focused on identifying, supporting and inculcating these new technological miracles. Planners must work towards what is going to be India's golden future. And perhaps what the petroleum minister can do is to take ownership of this grand enterprise, of ushering India into what will be a truly golden era, a Ram Rajya of sorts.

Indian policy watchers need to keep track of another pan-Europe campaign against gas.
8The argument here is that the carbon burn budget for Europe to be able to keep climate change under control does not allow for use of gas.
8The conclusion that gas has no role in the EU’s energy system derives from the fact that gas is a fossil fuel that emits substantial amounts of greenhouse gases.
8While gas may emanate less carbon dioxide than coal, the full lifecycle emission of methane is significantly higher, thereby closing the gap with coal

The Indian gas lobby remains deeply divided.
8There is little or no coordination between the big players such as RIL, BP, GAIL, ONGC, Shell, among others
8There is perhaps no need for coordination as the petroleum ministry remains a biggest votary for a gas-based future for India.
8One part of the gas lobby, headed by BP, has promoted a website which plugs pro-gas stories out of BP's web of global data but the website has attracted little or no public traction.
8A concerted anti-gas lobby, if it ever takes birth in India, can forcibly drive home its agenda, more so as the price of gas in India is high in relation to competing renewable energy options.

Given the fact that Bangladesh is dependent on liquid fuel or gas fired generation, it will perhaps make sense to supply low cost power from India.
8But the problem is who will handle the carbon emission overhang. In the longer run it will be futile for India to take the emission load in return for selling cheaper power to Bangladesh unless of course the emission overrun is compensated through a bilateral emission trading system.
8In that context perhaps, Bangladesh may be right to embark on LNG-based power generation. If the price of carbon is factored in, using LNG to fire its own power stations makes sense for Bangladesh (see our emission abatement costing analyis of different power sources below).
8The possibility of trading power to Bangladesh may still exist but that could be when there is an excess of renewable power during the day, and that too only if we have a surplus in a situation where inexpensive baseload coal powered stations have to kept running for technical reasons.

The Indian gas market continues to be stymied by adverse factors.
8The spot market has tightened and there is now speculation that prices may even hit the $10/mmbtu mark, way higher than the long term oil-indexed benchmark.
8It is not just higher spot prices which are worrisome.
8In industrial clusters around India, some liquid fuels stay competitive to gas, more so as gas is not under the GST regime.
8Then again, propane and LPG are proving to be more competitive to LNG
8The cloud will only lift once spot prices settle down at reasonable levels

Then again, the entire exercise is conducted for all the different sources of power taking into account their sensitivity to power prices
8The analysis throws up some interesting conclusion which are not easily apparent to the eye.
8There is also a very crucial set of calculations where the cost of carbon abatement is taken into account for these different energy sources
8When carbon abatement is compared to coal based power, some very surprising results.
8These are calculations based on real data after taking into account a series of cost and technical assumptions to make the data as authentic as possible.
