The future of the refining industry seems bright at this moment as disruptive technology such as electric cars and battery based power will only begin to bite at a later point in time. For now, deregulation, first-mover advantage and a growing market put the OMCs in a sweet spot as long as crude oil prices do not go through the roof.
8But there are also risks which are looming ahead.
And among them are:
8Rise in oil prices beyond USD60-65/bbl may bring deregulation of petrol, diesel and ongoing reforms in kero/LPG under pressure.
8Common carrier access to the product pipelines and other marketing infrastructure of the OMCs could lead to much faster penetration of non-OMCs into fuel retailing.
8The government has been pushing the OMCs to take on large volumes of investments in non-core segments and this may result in in capital misallocation.

Details
Refineries have hit a sweet spot because of the right juxtaposition of circumstances. Here are some of the reasons:
8
Low marketing margin to keep competition at bay
Initial expectation post diesel deregulation in 2014 was that marketing margins would expand. However, the OMCs have deliberately kept marketing margins low to prevent competition from non-OMCs.
8It is going to be a consumption led story
Expect strong growth in petrol and diesel consumption
8IOC is on top of the rung
Among other downstream players, find out why IOC is ahead of the pack and how Paradeep Refinery will eat into the market share of the others
8Fuel retail outlet economics challenging at low volumes
At an all-India level, average monthly fuel volume stood at ~170KLPM and the estimate is that of an RoIC of ~12% at these volumes.
8OMCs continue dominating marketing infrastructure

Low marketing margins would prevent any meaningful competition and OMCs are deliberately keeping margins down to keep competition at bay
8GRMs may be hit
The lobal glut in refining will expand by 2.2mbopd over 2016-21. In the short term too, the expiry of Chinese tax breaks on smaller vehicles, along with high petrol inventory and the end of driving season in the US, will dampen benchmark cracks.
8OMCs improve their operating leverage
Led by several process-efficiency projects, the OMCs have been able to increase the distillate yield.

Ryder Scott continues to carry on with its study of the HP-HT tight gas fields in the GSPC block KG-OSN-2001/3 which ONGC has now expressed its intent to acquire GSPC's stakes in the block.

Clearly, GSPC was in no position to handle the block and it was not in a position anymore to handle the complicated geology of the field. Even when the going was good, the company did not have the competence. More so now, with gas prices plunging and the geology turning more intransigent to conventional hydro fracturing procedures.
8The equipment deployed was proving to be insufficient to handle bottomhole fluid temperatures, which were as high as 460 degree Fahrenheit.
8What made it more difficult was that the field contained many faults and GSPC did not have the wherewithal anymore to drill multiple horizontal wells to sustain production.
8Then again, permeability and porosity is low, and due to this reason, the recovery factor is difficult to pull up even after hydro fracturing techniques are utilized
8The sulphur in the natural gas is more than the normal level, so production and processing facilities will have to withstand high sulphur content in natural gas
8It will take ONGC a long time and strenuous effort to ramp up production from the field, including  a brand new FDP.
8GSPC's FDP projected a slow ramp up, from 0.8 mmscmd, going up to 1.6 mmscmd, then on to 3.5 msmcmd and finally to 5 mmscmd in the third year but this slow push upwards will not be enough for ONGC.
8Production was meant to have started in December, 2013 but began much later in 2015. All deadlines are currently running well behind schedule.
8In its latest report, the PPAC claimed that production was down in the block on account of of well completions.

It is important to understand that the Deendayal field -- made up of the KG-8,15 & 17 discoveries -- is not the only one capable of delivering gas in the KG-OSN-2001/3 block
8There are six other discoveries --  KG-16, KG-22, KG-31, KG-21, KG-19 and KG-20SS -- in the block.
8GSPC had submitted Operating Committee (OC) approved DoCs for all six discoveries for review by the DGH.
8Last heard, the upstream regulator had asked GSPC to prepare a robust dynamic model keeping in mind the retrograde nature of the gas reservoir before the Field Development Plan (FDP) for these discoveries is submitted.
8GSPC was also advised to carry out simulation studies before the submission of the FDP.
8Even by DGH's own estimates, the GIIP of the new set of discoveries is an impressive 8 TCF of gas and ONGC will be able to shore up the reserves ever higher, to double this figure
8Bad permeability and other geological complications make extraction of the gas a difficult affair and the actual gas produced is likely to be much lower.
8Nevertheless the point to note is that there is scope for more gas output, beyond the 5 mmscmd from the Deendayal field, in the block.

Demonetization is beginning to bite in some segments of the economy.
8Six weeks on, there is now data available for various lead indicators of economic activity, which have displayed a mixed trend in November 2016.
8Some underlying themes related to the short term impact of the note ban on economic activity have been identified, chiefly healthy production in the organised sectors; disruptions in the labour/cash intensive and relatively unorganised sectors resulting in a loss of income for businesses and workers; and deferral of discretionary consumption. The pace of revival of economic activity in Q4 FY2017 is likely to depend on how quickly currency in circulation is replenished and digital transactions become widespread.
8Regardless, sluggish consumption is expected to weigh upon capacity utilisation in H2 FY2017, delaying private sector investment plans.
8Profitability in various sectors in H2 FY2017 is likely to be under pressure on account of rising raw material costs, particularly fuels and metals, lower volumes as well as discounts given to attract buyers.
8Although currency liquidity is likely to improve significantly by the end of January 2017, economic activity may take longer to normalise, based on which  at least one forcasting agency has revised the  growth in FY2017 to 6.6%.

There is limited detail on Donald Trump’s energy policies.
8However, it is clear energy will play an important role in helping shape Trump’s central vision to “make America great again.”
8From an international oil and gas perspective there are some broad ramifications we can perhaps highlight. The US oil and gas sector will likely benefit from a pro-oil Trump administration and as a result US oil and gas output may likely increase. Trump’s hostility to the lifting of sanctions on Iran may see more punitive sanctions re-imposed.
8If so this would weaken the case for foreign investment in Iran and adversely impact Iranian aspirations to grow oil production further. Conversely, Trump’s apparently warmer relations with President Putin may see a weakening of sanctions and increased foreign investment.
8All these scenarios will have implications for global oil supply in addition to the main driver which remains supply and demand fundamentals.
8What is certain is that prices will continue to be extremely volatile as industry fundamentals seek an equilibrium. Oil prices are likely to recover but slowly. Analyst forecasts suggest prices may reach US$60/bbl+ by 2018.

While the year 2016 in the LNG industry was expected to be one featured by ample supply and rather weak demand, it turned out to be more turbulent than observers previously anticipated.
8While in the year as a whole prices stayed low in both LNG sales contracts and spot purchases, the first half of December witnessed one of the steepest rises of spot LNG prices in the history (USD 2 / million Btu in two weeks)
8The causes include an unplanned outage of a big liquefaction unit in Australia.
8While investment activities for new LNG projects are not necessarily vibrant during the year, commissioning and construction activities are continuing, including four major liquefaction units in Australia. The Sabine Pass project started LNG exports, marking the first exports of commercial LNG from the lower 48 of the United States in the 50 year history of the global LNG industry.
